Friends in Need (ZombieSplitter53 and MarineAvenger) Part 2
Desmond nodded and walked with Sunny, leaving Sora with Alice. “They seem to be buddy buddy.”
“Not many beings like her,” Sunny responded. “To be honest, I’ve tried to replicate her programming, maybe make her a friend, but I haven’t had any luck. For now, she’s one of a kind. She must be happy to meet another like herself.”
“Sora definitely is not like Avanix. The fact he can laugh in almost any situation.. don’t know if it is commendable or frightening.” Desmond told the young engineer.
“Probably just his way of handling things.” Sunny walked up to one of the work benches, grabbing a few tools. “Everyone is different. Guess that applies to artificial intelligence too.”
“There was only one time I saw him not be all sarcastic and fun. For a moment I thought he wasn’t even the same program.”
“When was that?” Sunny asked, detaching Desmond’s arm and examining the shoulder mount.
“It was right after we got back from getting Elene and all them. He thought he was alone, and I swear for a second I thought he was crying. When I walked into the room, he was the same old Sora.”
“Sounds like he cares more than he lets on.” Sunny offered. “Could just be speculation, but perhaps, deep down, he’s grateful to be amongst other people besides that hateful EXALT leader.”
“Maybe. I can never understand him. I guess you just have the touch that I don’t.” Desmond said with a smile.
Sunny giggled lightly as she looked over the arm, opening a port near the top. “That’s me. Master of understanding artificial beings. Not much good with real people, but at least there are four people in this world I can always understand.”
“You don’t give yourself enough credit.” Desmond got close to Sunny. “Trust me when I say it was hard for me at first too.”
“I know.” Sunny frowned. “I’ve always lacked confidence. I try, and I feel I’ve come along way, but sometimes I wonder if it is me or the implants talking. Am I as comfortable with people now as I think, or is it all… artificial…”
Desmond smiled. “I don’t think so. Maybe it was like that at first but you have adjusted well. You are a lot stronger than most kids your age can say.” Desmond chuckled. “To think that you are actually older than I am.”
“That… is kinda weird.” Sunny smiled. “But I won’t hold it against you.” She pointed into the arm’s port. “There were a few areas responsible for control and mental links that were damaged. Took too much of a beating. But they should be fine now. Just make sure you try not to put so much stress on it. Nothing is indestructible, not even this arm.”
“I...will be sure to. I am taking it easy right now. Stress is not the best thing for a person’s body.”
“No, it isn’t.” Sunny lifted the arm up to Desmond’s shoulders, pushing it in and opening another panel. “Ready for me to connect it?”
Desmond braced himself and nodded his head. Sunny hit the switch, sending waves of pain through Desmond as the arm reconnected to his nervous system. “That...never gets easier.”
“I’m sorry. There really isn’t a way to help it.” Sunny looked as Alice walked over, a smile on her face. “At least it looks like that’s ready, so you can go get some aspirin.”
Desmond smiled and thanked Sunny. Sora walked up behind Alice, rubbing his head. “Whatever you did to him, hurt like hell for me.”
Alice raised an eyebrow. “You two are connected like that?” She glanced at Desmond, and gave Sora a look of extreme sympathy. “Oh… do I feel sorry for you…”
Sora waved his hand dismissively. “A little migraine will hardly kill me. Don’t know why, but it would seem his more...primitive implants have, what would a good word be...imprinted on me? I don’t know but it seems I am stuck with meat head here for a while. Parts of my programming are still in that noggin of his.”
Sunny grinned. “Guess you two will have plenty of time to get to know each other, then.”
Desmond rolled his eyes. “Oh goody.” Desmond coughed dryly for a bit and wiped his hand on his pants. “Shall we go?”
Desmond nodded and walked with Sunny, leaving Sora with Alice. “They seem to be buddy buddy.”
