Assignment to the officer's barracks has been an interesting experience. After declaring everything I had on me before heading into interrogation, all I got back was my watch. They handed me several papers describing my assignment as the first field-officer in the project. It read I was to sleep in a section of the barracks assigned to officers. What they failed to mention, which I discovered after carrying all my assigned gear down the corridors and down a set of stairs, was that this section is still under construction.

I carried everything back to requisitions and slammed the papers on the desk in irritation.
"Officer's barracks?", I said, trying to keep my composure, "You're assigning me to a bed not yet built? Really?".
The requisitions officer didn't seem very surprised, calmly trying to explain that it was not him who assigned me there, that he was just there to hand out the papers and the gear. I distinctly remember slowly wiping my hand across my face, asking where I should go to get this fixed, trying not to jump out of my skin and smack the guy.

Leaving my stuff there, I headed to the department of troop management. This should have been the place where I could be assigned a temporary bunk until the officer's barracks were done. Alas, the system was automated. He's what I understood from the guy's explanation:
When a new recruit joins, he or she is assigned the rank of Rookie. After this, he or she is entered into the 'bunking' system, which assigns them to a bunk. Officers get assigned to the officer's barracks, but their original bunk would not expire until after the construction was completed. Now here's where things went wrong; I was entered as a Lieutenant, had no previous bunk, and was assigned a site that was under construction. Apparently the guy who designed this was told that all field-officers would have been an NCO before, meaning they would have an existing bunk before being assigned to the new set. The engineer who designed this made the system so strict I cannot be put in another bunk without being demoted first, which they won't do for such a 'minor inconvenience'.

For now, I dropped my stuff in the common room and prepared one of the couches as my bed. Let's only hope we do not have soldiers on this base who make late-hours and come stumbling through the common rooms at 3 am in the morning...

Recruitment of Van Dam Axton

(Axton walks in to a military base with a bloody bag, and goes in to the majors office)

(MV) did you fulfill you contract

(Axton opens the bloody bag and pulls out a Korean generals head)

(AV) does this prove that I fulfilled my contract

(MV)hum impressive here's your money(the major gives Axton a briefcase filled with money)

(AV) Nice doing business with you goodbye (Axton starts walking to the door until the major grabs his shoulder)

(MV)Hold on boy there's some one here to see you.

(A man wearing a suit walks into the room and starts clapping

(MS) Very impressive my boy very impressive, major vandorn would you please give us a minute

(The major salutes the man in suit and walks out the room

(MS)You now you are a very hard man to find Axton

(AV) How do you know my name

(MS)because iv been watching you for a very long time my boy
(AV)ou relay so what do you now about me

(GS)I know you made your first kill at four years old, I know that you never went to school, but you were home schooled for most of your life, I also know that you speak Spanish,Russian,Chines, and English,
and during your home school lessons you learned how to kill man and beast, and when you were nineteen you had a family trial that you had to do which made you survive in the Alaskan wilderness for three months within nothing bot a knife some matches and a hunting rifle, and finally for most of your life you were trained to be the deadliest mercenary this planet has ever seen.

(AV) Is that all

(GS) no this is probley the biggest thing about you, you don't care about money, you want a challenge you want some thing to test your skills to there limits, YOU want an honorable death to die on the battlefield with your ancestors looking and smiling at you.

(AV) You seem to know a lot about me, what do you want

(GS) What I want is to give you that honorable death a true challenge, because I also know that you find war boring and predictable

(AV) all right so what are you offering me

(MS) i'm offering you a chance to save the world and if you survive a crap ton of money

(AV) how much are we talking here

(MS) twelve million dollars

(AV) whistles that's a lot of money

(MS) yes it is so what do you say

(AV) hold on you are offering me the greatest challenge of my life, save the world and twelve million dollars if I live

(MS)that is correct so what do you say

(AV) I say (Axton shacks the mans hand) you got your self a mercenary

(Axton follows the man in suit off the military base)

Your concerns have been noted recruit. If you put as much energy into the obvious mental preparation that you need as you do into worrying, you'd be the top soldier around base.

That said, I've noted your helmet request. We'll see.

Thank sir, I'll try my best to subdue my worries and turn my energy and thoughts onto the more important things that are on hand.

Audio Log [Translated from Mandarin]

The loss of our first soldier has hit the base hard. It is to be expected in any war, especially one like this, so I thought it was foolish for everyone to be so upset, but perhaps I am being a bit heartless. After all, I did not know him, and if it were Anna, I would be devastated. I don't know how I would go on, save for devoting myself to avenging her.....

.....oh, my stomach is churning now...

Anna told me she hates the co-ed showers just as much as I do. She said that, in the Russian military, the showers are monitored so there is no foul play, and as creepy as that may be, it would at least be reassuring. Anna isn't always available when I need to shower, and the last time a had to go alone, I freaked out when six guys came in at once, running out of there with soap still in my hair. They probably thought I was out of my mind, but I don't care...

I, um, I went to the labs to look at the aliens through the viewing windows. That crystal bug was fascinating.....i-in a creepy way. It would almost be beautiful if not for that terrifying face of its. I wonder, though, if we can utilize that incredibly resilient hide of theirs.....

The scariest of them was the one we're calling a "Thin Man", and not because it looks alien. Its how human it looks that makes it so scary. What if this isn't the first time they've been here? What if they're here now, walking around without anyone knowing? What if I walked past one of them a dozen times without realizing it?

(shudder) Lets...lets change the subject. I've been working on my English. Its getting there, but its coming along slowly. I remember reading somewhere that its the hardest language to learn as a second language, and I believe it. Luckily, Anna seems to have a solid grasp on it, and she's helping me learn it. When I first met her, my Russian was atrocious, and now I'm completely fluent in it thanks to her.

...or at least I think I am. Anna says I am, but she might just be trying to be nice. She's sweet like that, always thinking of my feelings, its why I....ahem.....

I had a weird encounter with a man in the shooting range today. I was approached by him while trying out the X-COM arsenal, and he claimed that he could help me with my aim. asking what I was trained in. I tried to tell him I was trained in everything X-COM had, though I avoided weapons with really strong recoils because of my size, but I think I said something wrong, because he started tutoring me like I said I didn't know how to use these weapons at all. He then had me fire a rifle, and when I missed, ironically because I overcompensated for the recoil, he started teaching me things I already knew. I tried to tell him this, but I think he misunderstood me, confusing my uncomfortableness for excitement. I eventually gave in and just did what he asked, wishing he wouldn't get so close to me. If there weren't so many people around to keep him in check, I would have had a panic attack...though...they, they probably would have just joined in...(shudder) my stomach is churning again...

Maybe I should head down to the gym. Hopefully, no one is going to try and give me tutoring in swordsmanship.

Well I finally payed my respects to space patty, again I don't know the man but the dead deserve respect after putting there life on the line.

off topic though,a few day ago I saw Ayame run out of the shower like a bat out of hell, hell she still had soap in her hair, and I can't relay blame here ,because I just realized that the showers were co-ed showers, that is the stupidest idea of all time,I don't wanna see naked women in the shower with me,unless there my girlfriend or my future wife and that's it,sigh but thank god when Ayame was running she had a towel covering her self up,I can't imagine what would have happen if she didn't have one, that just made my stomach turn a little bit.

But hay some good news my sister went in to labor a few hours ago,I can't believe it i'm gonna be a uncoil maybe once the baby is born ill ask the commander can I go to Alaska and see my nephew.

Lot's been going on. One of the ground-pounders got himself mort when they went in for cleanup. People are shaken up by it. They always are for the first one. They'll get over it, in time, and move on. Names will turn into numbers and eventually people will stop counting. Triad Goon #3 has got The Commander running around cleaning up his litter box. Don't care too much, but you should hear the chatter about the briefcase. You'd think this was Pulp Fiction or something.

Seems there's been a rash of bunk consolidation since then. Probably somebody adding too many abbreviations to their name while diagnosing daddy issues doesn't want people to isolate themselves. Anyway, bunking with Biggs(Big Sky) now. It's unsettling. His head's in the clouds but his heart is on the ground.

I've been getting warnings about shirking the range. Don't see much point of it. If I'm holding a rifle, this place is either toast or I'm getting beamed up soon.

Hand-weapons Section

Ayame Kasagi is training with a wakizashi bokken, repeatedly striking a wooden dummy in the forehead, attempting to hit it in the same spot each time. Stevie Steve and Aaron Bryant walk in, and seem surprised to see Ayame. Aaron says something quietly to Stevie, then quickly walks up to Ayame.

As he approaches her, Ayame is startled, stepping back and lifting her bokken towards him. He raises his hands, flashing her an apologetic look, and says "I'm sorry, but you're Ayame, right?"

"Wǒ Ayame.....I-I am. Why?"

"I couldn't help but notice you training with that sword. I was wondering how good you were with it."

Ayame rolls her eyes, her expression souring. "Oh, you think I'm small, so I need be trained by you. You like that guy with guns, think I need help when I missing one shot. You think you better because I am short!?"

"No, no, nononono!" Stevie says, walking to Aaron's side. "He was just telling me he was hoping for a sparring partner, that's all."

"You want fight? I...I....I not go easy!"

"That's fine," Aaron says, smiling and eagerly walking over to the wall of training swords. "I'd wouldn't want it any other way."

"I...I not...had to spar in long while. Y-you might get hurt...."

"I'll be careful." Aaron picks up a waster and stands before Ayame, a hopeful look in his eyes.

Ayame looks down at her hands for several seconds, her worried eyes showing deep thought. Finally, she looks up and gives a nod of approval.

"So, what is the traditional way to start a match for you?"

Ayame looks confused, trying to understand what he is saying. After several moments, she says, "I not have many uses for it, but when training with my.....w-when I in training, we always bow like this." Ayame bows at a 45 degree angle, her arms straight at her side. Aaron follows suit, and they both lift their swords.

As the two begin their match, they move slowly at first, apparently trying to gauge one another's skills. After a few moments, they start to move faster and faster, matching blow for blow. Stevie watches in earnest, his eyes dancing back and forth as he tries to follow their fluid motions.

"Maybe I wrong to yell," Ayame says, a frustrated look on her face. "Maybe I am one who is un...u-underestimating you."

"Don't be so modest," Aaron responds, his face lit up with delight. "Right now, I'd gladly give up my size and strength for your speed and agility."

The two continue, moving faster and faster. Ayame is quick, her rapid swings keeping Aaron on his toes. The two lock swords, and they struggle to push each other back. Ayame quickly starts losing ground, an enraged look covering her face. She suddenly jumps back, and with a frustrated huff, she leaps forward. Now moving three times faster then before, Aaron finds he is barely able to keep up. He starts to look worried, realizing Ayame has stopped thinking of this as a "friendly match".

Breaking apart, Aaron attempts to break the tension, cracking a smile and saying "You're really good. I have to admit, I'm not used to fighting someone who combines martial arts with their sword fighting, and that's starting to show."

Ayame just looks at him angrily, her eye twitching slightly as she pants heavily. "I don't think she's in a joking mood, Aaron," Stevie says, looking as worried as Aaron. Ayame yells, leaping forward again. "Why aren't you fighting back?"

"I-I can't!" Aaron answers, desperately trying to defend himself. "She's out for blood, and I don't think I can fight back without risking hurting her! Ayame, you win, can we call it a match?"

"Give her back!" Ayame suddenly yells, tears bursting from her eyes as she swings her sword faster and faster.

"W-what?"

"Give her back to me! Nǐ shāle wǒ de Lizzy! Wǒ yào tā huílái! Tā hái gěi wǒ!"

"Stop this, what are you doing!" Stevie runs up behind Ayame, grabbing her arm. She recoils with a terrified scream, and flip-kicks, barely missing his face. As she swings at him, Aaron jumps between them, barely blocking her. Ayame lets out an overhead swing, and when blocked, she kicks Aaron in the stomach. As he recoils in pain, she hits his wrist, causing him to drop his sword. Ayame lifts her sword again, bringing it down for the same strike she was using against the training dummy.

"Ayame! Стоп!"

Ayame stops her sword a inch from Aaron's face. She just stands there, even as Stevie and Aaron step away from her, her hands shaking violently, tears pouring down her terrified face. Anna Stone runs to her side, taking the sword from her hands and grasping her shoulders as she speaks quietly to her. She looks behind her, asking, "Are you two okay?"

Stevie nods, and Aaron answers, "Yeah, its just a sprain," holding his wrist. Anna nods to them, and puts her arm around Ayame, escorting her out.

"W-wait," Stevie says, taking a step forward, "What happened there? Is she okay?"

"It doesn't concern you," Anna responds, giving him a harsh look.

"Look, I just don't like the idea of standing idly by when a woman is crying. I can't do that, n-not...not again...."

Shaking her head slightly, Anna answers, "Don't worry, she'll be fine, I'll see to it," before exiting with Ayame.

The two men share a confused look before putting the swords away and leaving themselves.

"Oh...Did I get it? Crazy Technology, I love this advancement, but I seem to be getting old for all of this haha..."
*Walking*
"Kind of strange talking to myself, never done this before."
*stop's walking*
"Oh that spot looks good.......Ugh alright, well I just got out of my bunk and went into the hall to do this, didn't want to wake anyone up doing this and I dont have lots of time to do these during the day. Now I'm sitting in this hallway. I was wondering why do we have to do these? Is it to check on our condition? Well I have to say I'm felling great here, already made some friends, still havnt talked to everybody here but I will get there in time, I cant really complain, the food here is great. There is lots to do so you never get bored. On the off-hand there is a shower for both sex. I dont mind, but I can see that not everybody wants that, sure the guy's seem to like it, the girls on the other hand...not so much, I repect everybody's privacy woudnt want everybody to look at my junk either hahahaha. Anyway something I should probably mention, my training, its what I do most of my day, I tried all the weapons, trying to get a crip for them, but using the sniper rifel is like riding a bike for me, it probably has something to do with my right eye. Back when I wasnt married yet and was still living life....heck it was even before I joined the military to become an officer one day, god that was a long time ago...anyway my hobby back than was archery, it gave me something to do, and it was fun. The doctor told me that do to my right eye being out of focus by a couple prozent, it somehow increased my accuracy. I was one of the best Archers back then, til I went to military and gave that up. I do hope the Commander promotes me to a Sniper, but first I have to prove myself on the battlefield, but I'm sure my right eye will help me out here. I quess its something special about me, and I always thought the special thing about my eyes was that they had 3 different colour, grey, green, blue. Not many people have it, made me feel special. I'm getting off topic here. Yeah I'm kind of disapointed I havn't seen action yet, but I should be thankful for being in any danger of dying yet. What if I don't survive this?....No!...I will survive this! My daughter Elise,I got to come home for her, I miss her...I want to see her again..."
*shaking sounds and sniffeling*
"...and my wife, I'm scared that I will never see them again."
*sigh*
"I got to be strong, after all this ends, I will quit my rank as Officer, I will spend the rest of my life with my family. I already missed so much of my daughter growing up. I dont want to miss more...Being a dad is hard..."

I like this place but it seems no one talks to me outher then a few people who challenge me to fisty cuffs or wat Americans call fist fighting I'm still number one. I challenged this big guy who thought he could knock me out in one punch he never laid one on me. He sent one punch my way ducked it gave him a upper cut punch to the gut and elbow to the back be was out. I need some one more challenging but like I said it is kinda lonely not even my bunk mates talk to me much but what can one expect for being a merc I guess I'm used to it.
Just like SPACEPATTYS death I didn't morn I'm used to death but for every death I just fell that much more dead inside. I think I should look around and see if some one wasn't to hang out but like my old life people hire me because I'm hard to notice. So what's I acsepted for my skills on my unoticebilty. I should probly talk to some one about this I will see if excom provides mentol help.

So finally got here. Took a while, a guy called "Grelite" held me up a bit, could see I was lying in my application form. Well, I hope that has been put behind us, cause I'm itching to go. I'll try to do this journal in mostly English, to improve my control of the language, but Gaeilge is my main language, so you may find snippets of it here and there.

Project X-COM Shooting Range

Anna Stone is practicing with a handgun, firing shots at the furthest target, missing every time, she then stops and reloads the gun, but continues to miss. Colin Weger is Practicing with a Sniper Rifle next her to her, landing every shot flawlessly.

Colin turns and looks at Anna Missing every shot but reloading the weapon perfectly each time.

" You should probably Aim a little higher, gravity causes the bullet to drop when shooting " Colin gently grabs Anna's gun and adjusts it for her.

" There... Try it now "

Anna fires at the target and hits it in the chest, she then turns and looks at him. " Thanks... I can build these guns but when it comes to shooting them I can't hit the broad side of a barn. "

" Build them? So you're one of the engineers? "

" Sort of... I was recruited as an Soldier, but I help the engineers build things from time to time. "

" You can do that? "

" Yeah, Instead of goofing off like some of these other soldiers, did you hear some of them are having a Paintball game? Unbelievable... "

Colin is quiet for a brief moment and they both go back to shooting.
After putting a few more rounds into the target in front of him he turns back to Anna.

" So... Do you have any family back home? "

" I have a cousin... but other than that, No, I don't have any family... "

" I left my wife and daughter back home... "

Anna is silent for a moment and puts the pistol down.

" That reminds me of when I was little... My father was in the Russian military and was always on duty, he was only able to come home once every 3 years... "

Colin puts the Rifle down and is silent for a few seconds

" If you want my opinion about it... you should ask the Commander for some shore leave, or you can ask him if you can video chat with her... you really need to go and see her... Its not easy living with only one parent... "

" That's a good Idea... "

" My name is Anna by the way... "

" Colin... "

" Well Colin, I Guess I will be seeing you around then. "

" Hmm? Where are you going? "

" I am going down to the Gymnasium to practice some more "

" Bye for now I guess... :

Anna walks to the door and grabs the handle. " Bye"
She opens the door and leaves.

Colin looks back at the target, picks up the rifle and starts shooting at it again.

Base Log: 01

Well here it is, my first base log. They will most likely be monitoring these things for any signs of rebelliousness/insecurity, but I guess that's the risk I take. I feel it is good that this old paper journal survived their version of "Customs", as I do feel pen and paper are the best ways of communicating the written word.

Things in base seem to be a bit more casual than any of the other bases I have visited, but I suppose that is the nature of having a newly formed military installation. I do not know if there is any exact chain of command besides the Commander, but I suppose that is was the field promotions are used for. If that is the case, it's not working.

As for myself, I have missed the last 2 missions with the severe wounds. The doctors say I should be in here for another week or so, but I can not stand it. Already one man has died on mission, and I was here, laying on this bed, trying not to make the pain any worse. Ah well, hopefully I will be full up and rested for the next mission, whenever that arrives.

I think I may have to end this entry short. I feel the need to sleep again, and get some rest. I wish not, I have so many things to write about.

And so end the first journal entry of Anja Kjear.

Non-Combat Log 3 :

Well it finally happened, our first casualty Sq. Space Paddy... Wait is that his real name? Can't be...

Anyway, as you can probably tell, I don't feel much... I knew when I joined X-Com that people I know would get killed... I Am used to it... after all my friends in the Russian military all died as well... or at least I assume they're dead...

I will pay him my respect though... I have decided that I will carve a special figurine for every soldier that dies, just my way of saying thanks for serving with us.
The one I made for Space Paddy... ( Seriously is that actually his name? ) It's a Small Star with the X-Com Emblem carved into the center, I think he would've like it, Ayame told me it was pretty, but Women differ a lot from Men so...

Look at me talking like he is still alive...

The English lessons I've been giving Ayame are going well, she is really improving, I don't expect her to perfect it, but I will teach her enough to talk about as well as I do, witch is not actually that well, considering that sometimes I slur my words when I am Nervous or Scared.

Last mission they shot down a UFO, surprisingly it look little to no damage from the crash, Dr. Shen told me that it is made from some sort of Incredibly Resistant and light Alloy like Material that he plans on using for our Armor and Weapons in the coming months, might be a good idea to study it a bit, but since I am a soldier, I am not aloud in that area of Engineering... so I will have to ask Dr. Shen what he found out when I get the chance.

I guess I will end my log here.
