Stasis is your best friend for procrastinating. Sectopod walks in at a bad time? Stasis that bitch. There is also an extra skill that allows you to stasis allies, but I don't think I've ever had a use for that.Damn, man... I was afraid I wouldn't care much for the psi dudes, but I brought this one guy on the Blacksite mission. The only ability he had was causing one enemy to be immune to all damage, but to be completely frozen. Stasis, I believe it was called. My god, it was so useful.
Archons? Um... I know they can fly (or hover), and I know they enter a 'Battle Frenzy' when hit, but... that's it. I faced two on that mission. One I ambushed and killed before it got a chance to attack. The other I used Stasis on to assure it couldn't get an attack in (along with a turret and a trooper). So... friggin'... useful. And that was with just a single ability.
Psi ops in general are rather strong when they get decently far along their tree. Guaranteed damage, inducing panic, preventing and/or curing panic among your soldiers, a self heal on damaging enemies, as well as a get out of death free card.
Oh, and then there's domination. Permanent mind control. Your best friend when you need someone to take fire... Or you just want a pet chryyssalid.
And yes, I am following TD. Contrasting it with SoD, actually, because I had a fit of nostalgia (and also I needed to remind myself of... Certain things). The improvement is tangible. Not that everyone wasn't proficient in writing to begin with, mind. Hard to say something like this without accidentally implying the earlier stuff is poorer quality, but...
Fuck it, you know what I was trying to say. As you were.
