The roach is symbolic of a harsh childhood spent in a poor, dirty environment. And the size of it is symbolic of the exagerated view of the world when we are very young. (I occasionally have dreams that take place in the apartment I lived in as a child. It was a really small apartment, but in my dreams, it is friggin' huge, and I've always assumed it had to do with the altered perception of a child)
