Desmond blew out some air and laid his head down on the counter. “Even after coffee, I still can’t seem to stay awake…” He heard the door open to the bar and shifted his head so he could see who had entered.

Atka Ipiktok walked into the room, followed by a certain husky that was happy to be reunited with his master. “There you are, Desmond. I tried going into your secret lair, but it was locked.”

“Should have thought of that before hand, it is called “secret” for a reason. Though not much to hide from you…” He looked down at the dog next to Atka. “Sup dog, come back to take your revenge on me from stealing your master so long ago?”

“No, he’s been following me around ever since I got out of the medical ward. Won’t leave my side,” Atka said with a smile, petting Taqukaq. “A little annoying, but more sweet than anything.” Atka looked back at Desmond. “I was looking for you because I made some progress.” She walked over so she could lower her voice.

“I met the lieutenant that joined up with us. She knows a lot about psionics, and ran a simulation for me to try and improve my powers. I ended up using two mindfray helixes at once, not to mention that there’s a good chance they had a small, but present, physical manifestation,” Atka explained. “It was something I was hoping to be able to do, and apparently it is possible.”

Desmond slammed his hand against the counter and sat up. “Yep, should have expected that, after all, my orb has physical properties, why else wouldn’t other psionics be able to do so?” He looked down at his metal arm. “Here I am still stuck without a proper design to make this thing more than a glow stick, I have the means, just not the ends.”

“Well...maybe I know something that could help,” Atka suggested. “Something I realized when I was testing out my right arm in the medical ward when it was still healing. It hurt to move the arm, but the psionics only hurt half as much. I’m guessing that while our bodies are useful to directing the energy, it’s not the only means. If I had to think about where it runs through…” Atka tapped her head. “Considering this is the origin, its possible it passes through our nerves. If you could replicate those pathways in your mechanical arm, perhaps you could restore its full usefulness to your powers.”

“Could work, if I had the time or resources to replicate on of the most complex systems in the human body...if nothing else I could try to get Sunny to do it but who knows how long that could take.” He looked over at Atka once more, and slammed his hand back onto the counter. “Why did I have to lose this stupid thing?”

Atka shrugged. You did play the martyr by blasting yourself with a grenade at close quarters, though I can feel your pain...nearly losing my own, she thought to herself. “You’ll figure it out, I’m sure. Just give it time, I expect it’ll be awhile before you go on another mission anyway. Gotta let everyone else become a Lance Corporal, after all.” She started to walk off with her dog.

Desmond rose an eyebrow real quick and sat up with a start. “Atka, come here…”

The Inuit woman stopped, and turned around, walking back over. “What is it?”

Desmond leaned in close and took a good look at her. “Well I’ll be damned…”

Atka looked confused for a moment, blinking, and then realized what he was talking about. “Yeah...they’re turning blue. And that’s not a natural color for my people’s eyes.”

Desmond shook his head, “At first I thought it was just a mutation but it seems I was wrong...our bodies might be more attuned to psionics than we realize. I mean, look at what mine have become.” He opened his eyes wide, showing the dark red irises.

“How did I not notice you became a vampire?” Atka said with a grin.

Desmond took a step back. “I resent the fact I might glow at any minute but no, this is definitely not just a coincidence. Can you make a mindfray for me?”

Atka brought Desmond over into an unoccupied side room, and held open both of her palms. Twin blue helixes wound themselves up, tipped with the same crystalline spikes as always.

Desmond formed a red orb in his hand, only spinning it at a slow speed, as to not make a mess. “Well, I think this mystery just keeps getting bigger the more we dig deeper.” He took a deep breath. “So about this lieutenant, did she have anything unique about her?”

“You mean aside from being able to conjure fire partially through psionics?” Atka said with an amused grin, retracting the mindfray threads.

“Impressive, bring me with you next time. I might need to have a little chat with this soldier…” He said in an almost maniacal tone.

“I bet she’ll want to test out your powers like she did mine,” Atka responded. “I should get back to my room, considering how late it is. We can talk more about this in the morning.” Atka started to walk off with Taqukaq, only stopping briefly. “It’s funny, usually red and blue are opposing colors, but we’re on the same side here, as friends. I wonder what that means, if anything.” She smiled, and then walked off.

Desmond grimaced at the remark as he watched the girl walk away. “If only you knew…” he said in a whispered voice. He walked back to his room in silence, a long sleepless night ahead of him.

1000 Hours

A gentle beep resounded in Desmond’s head, waking him up. I do hope I’m not interrupting your sleep, Mr. Walker. That would be unfortunate, Avanix intoned.

Desmond put an arm over his face. Not like I sleep much anyways. What does Elene want now?

The Mistress wished to give you an update, and to talk...casually, though it is fairly early here still.

Might as well put her through...not like I can just ignore an AI in my head.

Acknowledged. And do close your eyes, I’d like to test a new protocol related to the P.R.S.

Um, okay then. Desmond closed his eyes and entered a meditative state to help relax and secure a connection.

An image focused in his mind, or rather, the lack of one. He could picture himself standing on an starry void, though he felt no fear of falling. There was a brief flash of orange, like the gases of a nebula, and a young woman appeared. She was wearing a white labcoat, black sweatpants, gray tennis shoes, and a gray shirt that had the symbol of Avanix on it. The scientist had long, dark blonde hair, and reptilian-looking yellow irises.

“Impressive. Protocol ‘Envision’ worked according to predictions, Avanix,” she said, having a rather unemotional expression right now.

The symbol of three orange rings appeared beside and lower than the young scientist. “Understood.”

Desmond shook his head, trying to fight away any haziness or migraine he felt. “Easy for you to say, this might take a bit of getting used to.” He took a knee and took some deep breaths. “So, what is the update?”

“I have acquired the means to shoot down extraterrestrial craft, though unfortunately I could not do it in such a way that only I would acquire the usage of the aircraft,” Subject Negative Zero said.

“So you gave Viktor control over an entire squadron of armed war planes? Why would you even need to do something like that anyways?” he said skeptically.

Elene held up a hand. “For your first question, not entirely. Avanix hacked thirty F-22 drones from the United States air force, and thus I have ultimate control over them. Viktor’s AI cannot use them without my help.” Elene lowered her hand. “For your second, I require further alien materials to continue my research. This includes their weaponry, alloys, Tz6, corpses, power sources, and computers. To do that, I need to shoot down their aircraft.”

Desmond put a hand on his nose. “You know, you won’t look very good in front of the Council if you keep doing stuff like this. I want to protect you, but you are making it a little hard here.” he said as if he was lecturing a sibling.

“The Council likely would not care one way or the other. And if they do, the blame can always fall on Viktor. A useful guinea pig.” Elene smiled ever so slightly without her knowledge, imagining Viktor mutated to be half guinea-pig. The smile did not look entirely natural.

“Well, just don’t do too many illegal actions, only so much blame can fall upon him.” Desmond stood up trying to keep his steady. “You know, I wouldn’t really call this a success since I am probably burning more energy than a star. Anything else you wanted to ask Elene, as much as I enjoy talking to you, I do have responsibilities on base.”

“I should be maintaining this environment and helping ease the burden,” Avanix said, disappointed. “A bug to fix, I suppose.”

“Unless you can manipulate psionics, I doubt you will have much luck, it would probably be more stable if there was more than one person using power.”

“Perhaps. Do send any notes you have that could help us further understand psionics when you have the chance, I’ll have Lily go over them,” Avanix said.

“On the subject of the Handmaidens…” Elene said, her expression growing serious again. “Emma should be arriving in Cross Technologies soon. I would be masking my true state of mind if I said I wasn’t worried. Although his support was promised, we will see if it remains that way. If it does, I will have secured a laboratory to extend my research beyond Viktor’s reach.”

“And, a question for you, Desmond. Would our very existence not already be illegal, considering the status of human cloning in most countries worldwide?” Elene finished.

Desmond rose an eyebrow. “Well, considering we are already here, I would think that it wouldn’t matter, we did not create ourselves after all.” He walked over to Elene’s image and put a hand on her ‘shoulder’. “I won’t let anything happen to us, don’t worry about it too much.”

Elene seemed surprised, having the illusion of actually ‘feeling’ him do so. “I have created the Handmaidens, an action which is considered an aberration by those who follow ethical codes. And yet, I cannot cease my research. My primary function is to continue Lusett Exalt’s research into the advancement of technology, largely related to developments related to the invasion. If I were to stop, I would lose my purpose.”

Desmond sighed, and looked into Elene’s eyes. “It is thoughts like that, that will make you lose your purpose. What stands us out is our ability of free will. Once you came out of that pod you became your own person, not some tool to be used.” He put his pointer finger on her upper chest. “I tend to forget that from time to time, but make sure you don’t. I was made to be a warrior, there is no escaping that, but you...you have the power to be who Elene Exalt wants to be, not Lusett.”

Elene was silent for a moment. “You are not...incorrect...not entirely. However, I do not have complete free will, or the luxury to choose all the time. XCOM was my enemy by association with Viktor when I was born, and it will remain that way. The content of my research and the name I bear ensures that. That cannot change...and thus, I fear that even if I have the capacity to break free from Viktor, I will still have to fight...and it is a fight I logistically cannot win.”

“Then don’t fight using logic, fight with your spirit. The best battles are won when the odds are against you. You are not Viktor, and Viktor is not an Exalt. That is why you will win…” He slapped her shoulder lightly. “And you have me.”

Elene smiled, though it was a confused expression, as she felt something she had not previously. “You...have surprising optimism...I...I do look forward to being able to meet you in person. Hopefully that day will come.” I said “hopefully” That word is not bound by the parameters of logic, it serves little purpose...why did I…

Elene said a quick “goodbye”, and the celestial landscape vanished from Desmond’s mind, along with Elene and Avanix.

Desmond eyes fluttered open, all his muscles straining from exhaustion. “God...that really does drain you, I will have to test that with Atka later…”

Alexia lazily stretched her arms as she slowly came around, wishing she could sleep longer, but knowing it wouldn't happen. Even if she tried, Jessica would be up soon anyway. Her eyes slowly opened, and she looked around, realizing she wasn't in her room. "Guess Jessie spent the night over."

"She did," Modya said, getting dressed at the foot of the bed. Alexia sat up and stretched some more, not carrying that she was barely clothed. Modya smiled but looked away, always the gentleman.

"So, you to have some fun last night," Alexia asked in a teasing voice.

The Russian shrugged. "Vozmozhno..." He stood up and headed towards the door. Alexia sprang to her feet, wrapping her arms around his waist as he was about to open it. With a sigh, he started, "Alexia, I..."

"I wanna have some fun too." She pressed her chest against his back. "Can't you play hooky?"

Modya spoke in a serious tone, but kept his face turned away to hide his smile. "Alexia, you told me to tell you when you were being childish." Alexia let out a "hmph", but remained quiet. "And you need to take it easy, remember? You're sick."

"Oh, but being in bed all day is so boring."

Modya shook his head. Turning and placing his hands on Alexia's shoulders, he said, "Alex, if you promise not to make this hard for me..."

"I thought you like it when I made it..." Alexia started with a grin.

"THEN," Modya interupted. "Then I promise I'll be all yours after I finish today's training. Deal?"

Alexia nodded. Giving him a big kiss, she said, "Don't be late."

"Am I ever?" Modya took off, not wanting to be delayed any more. Alexia peeked out the door, watching him go.

What are you doing?! Get in the room, you're half naked.

Oh good, you're up. Body is all yours, I'm saving my energy for tonight.

Jessica let out a yelp, ducking into the room before anyone could see her. Quickly getting dressed, she scanned the hallway and slipped out, heading for the mess-hall.

"Alexia!" Ayame ran up to her, Sunny following closely behind. "I've got a favor to ask of you."

"Ayame?" Jessica looked at the frantic Asian woman with surprise. "What did you... actually, I'm..."

Ayame grabbed Jessica's shoulders and pulled her away from Sunny. In a low voice she said, "They gave me this laser pistol to study, practice with, and what not. I took it apart to see what makes it tick, but now I got this extra part, and I can't figure out where it goes."

Jessica glanced back at the silver-haired girl with the confused look. "Why don't you just ask Sunny for help?"

"'Cause it's embarrassing!" Ayame practically hissed. "She's smart, smarter then me, but it is still embarrassing to ask a kid. At least Ryan is an adult. But I gotta return this thing later today, and I won't have time if I don't go now."

Jessica bit her lip. "So, you need me to watch..."

"You will! Thanks, I'll pay you back, Alex." Ayame ran off without another word.

"Sorry, Jessica." Sunny walked to the young scientist's side.

Jessica shook her head. "No, no, it's fine. I don't mind spending time with you." She smiled at her short friend. "Besides, you're one of the few people that can tell us apart." She took Sunny's hand. "Come on, let's go get some breakfast."

The pair quickly went to the mess, trying to beat the morning crowd. As they sat down, Sunny cautiously asked, "Can I... ask you something?"

"Of course." Jessica struggled to say between bites of the gooiest oatmeal she had ever had.

"Do you... think we c-could make a gene meld to give someone, um, electrokinesis?"

"Like, the power to shoot electricity from their hands like some kind of Sith lord?" Jessica chuckled.

Sunny shook her head. "Not make, just... control."

Jessica thought for a moment, slowly twirling a green strand of hair. "Hmm... maybe. It wouldn't have that many tactical uses on the battlefield, but I'll look into it, if you'd like."

Sunny smiled, nodding her head. She jumped as a voice behind her shouted, "Oh, my God, look at you!" A young blond girl sat next to Jessica, looking her up and down like an action figure.

Jessica's eyes darted back and forth nervously. "I... beg your pardon..."

The girl smiled widely. "Your big, expressive eyes, your green hair, those bouncy boobs that are larger then a girl with your excellent figure should have. You look like an anime girl! Awesome!"

Jessica's face reddened. "N-now see here, you... you..."

"Um, Jessie," Sunny said, hiding a smile, "I-I think she's trying to compliment you."

"I'm Eve," the girl said. "Sorry, didn't mean to be awkward, it just happens."

With an understanding smile, Jessica responds, "I know how that feels. I'm Jessica, and this is..."

"Sunny, I know, I was dying to meet the young prodigy." Eve twiddled her fingers towards Sunny.

Giving a small wave in return, the small engineer asked, "Where do you work? I-I didn't know there was another person so young working here."

Eve rolled her eyes. "I work with my sister, who is acting as the Commander's go between for the soldiers. And I only look young. I'm actually twenty."

"Really?" The bouncy lab tech's eyes lit up a bit. "So you're only about a year older then me. I know we just met, but I wanted to get something for my boyfriend. Any advice?"

Eve closed her eyes in serious thought. After a moment, she said, "Well... you can't exactly go to the local X-COM gift shop." She clapped her hands together. "How about a new look for him. Like a new hair color! You could dye your hair like Sunny!"

"Why does everyone keep saying that?" Sunny placed her hands on her head, running her fingers through her silvery-grey hair. "I don't know why my hair is this color, but I didn't..."

Eve shook her head. "No dear, I meant she should dye it the same color."

"I don't know." Jessica twirled a strand of hair. "Knowing Modya, if I changed something for him, he'd feel guilty, and that's the opposite of what I want." She smiled at Sunny. "You said you were Russian, right? Would it be wrong to ask you what Russians like as presents?"

"I don't think so, but I lived in America my whole lift, so I wouldn't know." At Jessica's disappointed look, Sunny quickly added, "But Modya is always wearing that hat. W-why not knit him a new one?"

The lab tech poutted. "I can't knit. I don't have any talents outside of work."

"Nonsense." Eve placed her arm around her new friend's shoulder. "Everyone has a talent."

Jessica thought. "Well... I can cook. To be honest, I'm sometimes afraid of what my family is eating with me away."

Sunny clapped her hands together. "You could cook him a nice meal! H-He'd love it!"

"Well... he has mentioned a few dishes he likes that I could pull off, but how would I..."

"Leave it to me!" Eve slapped her on the back. "I'm sure I can get them to let you use the kitchen."

Jessica nodded, her face lighting up. As she started to thank her new friend, all three girls were distracted by the arrival of a half a dozen security guards, all insisting on everyone staying back. "What do think is going on?"

"I don't..." Sunny bobbed her head around, trying to see past the guards. "It looks like they're g-guarding a little girl. I... I think she's even younger then me."

Eve grinned. "Looks like she finally went through with it. Glad to see she isn't keeping her locked up, either, though that probably won't last long."

Jessica shot her a curious look. "Do you know who that is?"

Eve shrugged. "Don't worry. I'm sure you'll find out soon enough." She placed her head in her hands. "So, tell me. What are you going to cook for... Modya, was it?"

White walls stared back at Albert, as he tried his best to get comfortable in the flimsy plastic chairs lining the room. He considered trying to get some rest while Summers was under, but he shook his head, dismissing the thought. Best be awake so I’m the first one in to see her, he thought.

The door to the waiting room opened, and Atka walked inside. She looked over, seeing Albert. “There you are, Albert. I was looking for you,” she said. “I wanted to congratulate you on how well you did commanding that mission.”

Albert turned to look at Atka, and replied, “Eh, the fact that I’m sitting here attests to how well it went. Besides, it isn’t my first time running an op, so a certain degree of experience helped me.” Albert scratched the back of his neck uncertainly, and continued, “They say Summers will be awake in a couple hours, been a habit of mine to visit those who were wounded under my service.”

Atka sat down in a nearby chair, not having as much trouble with it as Albert due to her lighter frame. “I’m sure she’ll be glad to see you. I know I was happy to have so many people visit me after Operation Caged Hero.” The Inuit woman sighed. “I suppose that thing that everyone’s calling the 'cyberdisc' and their 'mechtoid' attest to what our tall friend warned us about. Advanced cybernetics was a nice way of putting tough robots and mechs that are as good as what we have, if not better.”

“Yeah, but hey, at least we have our own monsters to fight theirs,” Albert replied, “Would have loved to have one of the MECs with us on that mission.”

Atka nodded, though her expression was grim. “I won’t deny that Amanda was effective on the battlefield...I just worry about how far we’re willing to go with all this. I’d prefer if we didn’t end up with human ‘Floaters’ or something equally horrible.”

Albert shrugged in response. “Well, I assume that we’re keeping the augs and gene mods consensual. From what I can assume, the X-Rays are not so keen on having it that way, so I can safely say that gives us a bit of moral high ground over sticking metal bits on our troops.”

Atka smiled. “Well, that’s what you and I are here for. To make sure to get everyone home safely from deployments, and to remind the Council that they don’t need to take drastic measures. It’s good for morale, as well, to have two missions go without anyone K.I.A. We’d been having a bad streak lately.”

Albert nodded. “Yeah, no more deaths after this, even if that goal is a bit unrealistic. Been a bit of a bumpy start, but we can turn it around. If that isn’t humanity’s shtick, we’ll make it that here. After all, we’ve taken some of the alien’s heaviest hitters so far, and we’re still standing.”

“You have the right idea. We can’t count on no one else dying, but we have to at least try,” Atka affirmed. “And although I have reservations about the MECs, they’ve proven to be able to take hits that no one else can. I can’t imagine how the other mission would have gone if Amanda hadn’t been there to help with the Mectoid.”

“Probably would have involved a few more explosions. It seems that liberal use of them assists in taking care of aliens, regardless of size or metallic composition.”

“I’m not looking forward to the other things the Thin Man said were in store. He mentioned a warrior race of sorts...so we’re going to have to be fighting actual soldiers that are probably armed with the best weaponry and armor possible,” Atka mentioned.

“Well then, we’re going to have to hit them with our best guns and armor as well. Go for the good ol’ cross counter, even if our arm is a bit shorter,” Albert replied, mocking a punch out at an imaginary opponent.

“Maybe, but let’s not get overconfident, now,” the Inuit scout said seriously. “Otherwise we’re going to go downhill again.”

The Amero-Anglican’s face turned grim, “Yeah, I know that. But you gotta have some confidence, else you’re just setting yourself up for failure. Simple fact I’ve learned the hard way.”

“I understand,” Atka responded. “I know what it is like to have missions go sour.”

Albert nodded glumly, faint signs of pain traced across his face. “Y’know, I just realized, I never asked you where you originally served,” he said, trying to turn the conversation away from that.

Atka didn’t press further. “Canadian army,” she replied. “I was an officer back then, a lieutenant.”

“OF-1, eh?” Albert said, “Good work. Was British Army myself, Captain.”

Atka chuckled. “They offered to make me one, once, despite the times I’d messed up. I turned them down because I didn’t want to command so many people that I didn’t really know my troops personally.”

“I can see where you’re coming from. Personally, I took the promotion because it was the easiest way to keep the most people safe, regardless of the fact that it depersonalized those under me. After all, to me an officer doesn’t need to be a friend, just the invisible hand of God that keeps you safe.”

“Maybe,” Atka said. “I know that it can hurt be close to people you can maybe lose…” She sighed. “I nearly gave the Commander a heart attack several times during my extraction from Shanghai.”

“Well, she didn’t have one and you made it back alive, so all’s well in the end.” Albert shrugged. “Better than a couple of extract ops I ran back in Syria.”

Atka hesitated, not knowing if he wanted to talk about it or not. She tapped a finger against the side of her chair, debating whether she should press him further or leave it alone.

Taking Atka’s silence for permission to continue speaking, Albert said, “Operation Curtains Up. Meant to grab the survivors of an infantry platoon and evac them. 32 of my boys died in exchange for 27 survivors.” Albert paused for a moment, then muttered, “One of them was my li’l brother.”

A look of surprise and sadness replaced Atka’s previous expression. She was quiet for a few seconds. “I’m sorry, Albert. I couldn’t...imagine losing my younger sister like that…”

Albert shook his head, a dismissive smile on his face. “That isn’t all of it. Thin Men were present in the op zone at the time Richie’s platoon was advancing. One of those bastards is sitting in our custody right now,” he spat. “And that’s why I’m here today.”

Atka bit her lip, trying to think of something to say. “I’m not justifying what they did, Albert...but I don’t believe that particular one is as bad as you think,” she said with a hint of nervousness in her tone that was otherwise confident.

Albert snorted. “That’s what I figured as well. Then I asked it. Turns out it was one of the Thin Men there. So yeah, it probably is just as bad as I think.” Albert ground his teeth in frustration, “Sure it sounded remorseful, but they’re infiltrators, spooks, liars. Can’t trust ‘em.”

Atka closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them again. “I was the one they called in to interrogate him initially, Albert. I learned a lot of things, including the fact that his people have become something he despises. I was the one that suggested we not terminate him...because I see the danger we’re in by ‘de-humanizing’ our enemy, for a lack of a better term. They’re sentient beings as well, despite whatever has been done to them. The Thin Men most of all are more human than anything else we’ve seen so far.

The Inuit woman sighed. “I mean, there was a time in which settlers said, ‘oh, these people here in America aren’t equal to us, so it’s okay if we take their land and kill them if they refuse to leave.’ If we treat every single alien we come across as if they’re inferior, we treat dangerous ground. If there’s any chance that we can come out of this war saving some of them from annihilation, then I’m willing to take it.”

Albert shook his head, “The difference there is that we’re the natives, and they’re the asshole settlers. They were the ones who came in and started stealing our people, probably as part of some ‘high agenda us low-born scum cannot understand’.”

You’re not too far off on that count…not that I can tell you that they’re here for human psionics. “That doesn’t mean I think we should just wipe all of them out. Genocide isn’t justifiable, especially since it seems like most of the aliens aren’t following whoever or whatever is in charge willingly,” Atka replied. “Of course, the ones we fight we shouldn’t try and talk it out with when plasma and lasers are flying...but its something of a consideration for the future.”

“Please, why should we care about their future when they so obviously have no regard for ours? Did they have any regard for Shimizu? Or how about Campbell? Maybe they cared about the future of Vickers or Smith? Perhaps it was out of consideration that they killed Richie!” Albert nearly shouted, the hatred in his voice evident.

Spikes of icy psionic energy started to come out of Atka’s right palm, and she placed her left over it to stop them from being noticeable. “When did I ever say that I thought the majority of them were good? I’m saying that I saw some speck of hope in the one we captured...I’m not going to let him die just because he might have killed someone dear to you. If he did, does that make him a monster? I don’t know...because we’ve killed plenty of them too. That’s how it always is in war.”

Atka stood up. “You talked about us having the moral high ground...and we do. But we risk throwing that away if we pretend that they’re just evil...some of them, like the chryssalids, likely are...but some of them its not as black and white as we’d like to believe.” Calling them ‘siquttipaa’ isn’t exactly true…

“It’s plenty black and white to me. They invaded our homes, took our families, so we need to push them out, make sure they can never hurt us again. If that involves wiping out the few good with the million evil, so be it. We did what we had to do to survive,” Albert said, as he took a standing position and began pacing the waiting room, his mind so focused on his argument that he barely registered his surroundings.

The Inuit woman sighed. “I know that this is more personal to you than it is to me...but understand that it’s not just about them. The minute we decide that it is okay to treat sentient beings like something they aren’t...that we say that we’ll kill a being that helped warn us about things to come...and gave us a shot at finding the alien base even though it caused it tremendous pain to do so...we begin to walk down a path from which there is no turning back.”

“And that’s why we exist,” Albert countered, “XCOM exists above and beyond the boundaries of the state, so we can do whatever it takes to win. Then, after we do so, we get locked away for ‘war crimes’ and ‘unethical human experimentation’. A nice, simple, self-disposing system for purging away the blackest parts of the human heart.”

Atka’s expression darkened. “I don’t think anyone here will easily let something like that happen. We’re trying so hard to keep from becoming like them...to do this the right way. And in the end...if we win...we’re going to have more power than we should. Plasma weaponry, perhaps. Technology at the level of the aliens with our own personal touch, maybe. That scares me more than anything...it means that we wouldn’t be accountable for anything we did, and it means that we...or more truthfully, the Council...would hold the world in the palm of their hand. That may be just as much of a threat to humanity as the invaders are.”

Albert collapsed in a chair, palming his forehead. “Please, enough with this moral ambiguity. I came here to avenge my brother, shoot some aliens, and make the world a better place for my wife, not in that order. The Council can go get anally probed with a Scatter Laser for all I care. After all, I’m just a soldier, not a politician or journalist or whatever. I’m just here to win the war, not win the peace after. That’s why most all of us are here, regardless of whether we think otherwise.”

Atka looked down for a moment. “I’m sorry for pushing my worries on you, Albert. It was not my intention to upset you. Just...remember what’s most important out of those things you listed. If all we care about is fighting and killing, we’re not better than the person we kicked out because that’s all she cared about.” The Inuit woman started walking for the door, rubbing her forehead.

Albert recoiled slightly at the comparison. “I’m the one who should apologize. After all, I’m the one who was going on about how we need to kill all the bastards, and you just simply defended your beliefs. I just hope that it’s people like you who clean up after the war. Lord knows I’m not fit for that.”

The scout glanced back over. “Regardless, you’re going home after all of this, and I won’t be convinced of anything otherwise. Remember that you have a wife waiting for you to return home, safe and sound,” she finished, and left the medical ward.

“Yeah, I guess…” Albert said to no one in particular, leaning back against the wall, staring back at the endless white.

X-COM Gymnasium and Exercise Area.
Time - 1300 Hours, STD.

The training room was about as busy as it normally was, despite Exalt pressuring the organization. In the middle of the room was Ammelia, doing sit-ups on a long black mat. Three men stood next to her, talking and looking around at the other soldiers. On the other side of the room Eva is bench pressing trying to keep her strength up. When she three men next to Ammelia she ignores it for the moment, but keeps her eyes on them.

The taller of the men walked up to Ammelia, giving a half smirk. "Hey... you're the blind girl aren't you? The one that went out to Moscow?".

She stopped working out and looked up at him, returning a smile, "Yeah, that's me, nice to meet you."

"How does it feel to be one'a'da highest ranked women hea?" The second one said as he walked up to her.

"Fine, I suppose, I just wish I could do a little more to help." She replied, brushing a stray strand of blight blond hair back into place. Eva sees the men around Ammelia but she continues to watch as if she is plotting a way to get her out of there. but she keeps working out not getting there attention.

" Maybe we could take you out of here and get a bite to eat?" The Taller man said, keeping his grin. The third friend squinted his eyes at him, but he just laughed, "Don't give me that look! What's wrong with taking a girl out for a snack?"

"Hmm..." Ammelia thought for a second before responding, "Sure, I'll meet you down there in an hour and a half. I've got to get through my two hours per day."

"Aww C'mon," the second man said, "Can't ya get that dun some otha time?"

"Sorry, but if I don't finish it now I probably won't have time to do it later. There's suppose to be a big lecture today." She said, continuing her exercise.

The first two men squinted down at her, the third backed up, obviously not wanting to get involved.

" Come on... It'll be fun, you can miss a little exercise...", The taller man said, taking a few steps closer to her.

Eva walks over to the three men and Ammelia. "Hey is there a problem here?" The men see a Short blue haired woman next to them. "I say again, is there a problem going on here?"

"Oh nothing, In fact, you could come with us if you want..." He said devilishly, "I've always been a fan of strong women."

"Oh is that right?" Eva looks at the one of the me that was away from the others. "You, what exactly were you planning to do here?"

He raised his hands up, "Hey! I'm not responsible for what these perverts do alright?! I was just having a conversation with them!"

When the man said that, the realization of what they were trying to do finally hit her. Ammelia's eyes widened as she stared daggers at the pair.

"We wa just planning to take some ladies out fo a snack! Nothing perverted!" The second man said.

"Really, because I see three guys surrounding one woman and one of the men wanting nothing to do with what they're doing. How can I not think something perverted is going on."

"How about we talk about this outside? We're kind of making a scene here..." The taller man whispered to Eva.

Eva get's a evil smile on her face, "OK lets go outside." Eva looks at Ammelia, "Is that fine with you?"

"Fine..." Ammelia said as they walked out of the room and into the hall, curious eyes watching them from all sides as they left.

"Listen, I just wanted to have a good time with this lady alright? Do you have a problem with that?", The First Man said as soon as he entered the hall, crossing his arms.

"Well that depends on your term of fun is and what about you" Eva says to the second man. "Why did you approach her, no better question, why did three guys approach one woman?"

" I thought they were just going to talk to her, shoulda known better." The third man said.

"Listen, Who do you think you are huh? You're just some gun, who do you think really contributes to this project? The soldiers? The engineers?" He said to Eva as he pulled a Scientist ID of out his pants pocket and waved it around in front of her. It read, 'Arden Mathews, Scientist, Level 3 Lab Access.'

"People like you give scientists a bad name..." Ammelia said, crossing her arms.

"Really, i'm just a gun, you know I will admit that the scientist do some work here. But when it comes contributing to this project, we soldiers do the work. Without us you will not have anything to research and once you have nothing to research what good are you then. But like the lady said you think just because your a X-COM Scientist that makes you special. I know one person that is smarter then you."

He scoffed at her, crossing his arms. "Who?"

"Her name is not important, But what I can say is that she created a lot of things that X-com uses today, mainly the holographic globe, and unlike you she was working on a cure for cancer and she was the first human to successfully clone animals. She was a brilliant woman and you don't deserve to know her name."

Lucett? Why mention her? Not many knew about Lucett's work, she preferred to stay out of the spotlight. Does she know her somehow? Hmm...

"So, What does that have to do with anything?" He said, looking her up and down.

"I think she means that she's smart, but you're an idiot..." Ammelia said boldly.

"Why you..." He said with anger in his voice.

"Listen here you worthless excuse of a man. I Recommend that you leave now before I make you leave and you friend too." Eva turns to the third man, "You go back to your room, you want no part of this."

" Yeah, This is gonna get bloody," the third man said as he walked off.

The Scientist got into Eva's face, "If you touch me I'll have you shipped home faster than you can blink!"

Ammelia looked over and tapped Eva on the shoulder, "Can you read me his name tag?"

Eva clears her thought, "His name is, Arden Mathews. Why does his name matter, you have a plan or something?"

" Arden Mathews..." she says trying to recall, " I remember you... You and your brother lobbied for my father's support. Your brother runs this pebble of a company down in Florida, my father thought it would be a good idea to fund you. What if give him a call and tell him to decline it?"

His eyes widen, " So?! If you think I need your father's support you're out of your mind!"

Ammelia continued, "I also overheard you talking with your brother about Illegal Immigrant work, what if I let my father know? He has the power to turn everyone against your pathetic little company. You and your brother will never work in this industry again... Shall I give him a call?"

The man stared at her with his eyes wide, completely baffled.

"If I see you talking to another woman like that again, I will personally end your career... Now get out of here..."

The man got's a angry look on his face but instead of continuing the argument he walks away, the second man following him.

Eva looks at Ammelia. " Nice work, as much as I would like to deck that guy it's better this way. Nice work but I guess introductions are in order. Hi I'm Eva, what is your name and what did you mean by your father funded them?"

"My name is Ammelia Cross, my father is the founder and CEO of Cross Technologies. I'm sorry you had to see me act like that, but those guys were sick freaks."

"Yea, when three guys are surrounding you you might want to say no to what ever they offer and if they keep pressing you about it keep saying no. Wait a Minuite , is your fathers name David Cross?"

"Mmhm." She nodded, "And I'll be sure not to let someone try and take advantage of me like that again. Usually people know not to mess with the Cross Family."

"Really, well i'm sure you notice that your name doesn't mean shit here, I mean I heard that on your first day here you got your ass kicked by the woman that I only heard about named Scarlet Van Dam."

"She was a psychopath, there's not much you can do to a person with nothing left to lose, it also didn't help that my family's influence only goes as far as the business world." She said, shrugging.

"Hmm, this Scarlet sounds like a fire cracker, wish I would have met her. And as you said wait what was you life like before this war?"

" I never really left my home before the invasion, I joined X-com because I wanted to help people." Ammelia replied, walking back into the room and taking a seat on a metal bench near the door.

Eva rubs her head, "Look wanting to help people is a very noble goal but as you can see. We don't fight the aliens constantly, what did you think you were going to do when you got here?"

"More," She said simply, " I just want to do... more... For the civilians, for my friends, for everybody..."

She Sighs, "Look, you think your the only one that want's to do more fore those people out there. I wish I was out there every day killing those aliens and saving those civilians, but the thing is. We can not predict were the aliens are going to be if we did we would be fighting them."

" I mean... I Wish I could do more... I know we can't predict where they will attack, but I want to protect my friends, not sit here at base." She said, somberly.

"Look I get you want to protect your friends but here's the harsh reality you can't save every one. I mean look at Moscow, in 12 hours the aliens wiped out almost if not every one in Moscow. Look, I know you want to help your friends, but you have to remember that like you and me they signed up for this, they know the risk and they accepted them."

" I know the risks, but I want to be out there to protect them. I know I can't save everyone, but I want a chance to try..." She replied, looking up at Eva.

"Be patient kid, you can't be on every mission when there are others here, and after your terror mission the commander is being a little more cautious or at least I think she is, but since Desmond was also on that terror mission and he was out recently i'm sure you will get your chance."

"Yeah, I hope you're right," She responded, "Do you mind if I ask you a question?"

"Go right ahead I got nothing to hide. What do you have to ask?"

"That woman you were talking about before, do you know her?" Ammelia asked.

"That scientist I was mentioning? Yes, she is a personal friend of mine and she saved my life why do you ask?"

"She used to work for my father's company, she's like a Aunt to me." Ammelia smiled.

"You knew Lusset? Well that's a damn shame, I might have some bad news for you, and you can tell the commander this to if you want to."

" I... what is it?" She said hesitantly.

"Lusset Exalt is dead, brutally murdered in fact."

Ammelia's eyes widened, "D..Dead? I... I..."

"Look, if you think you feel bad how do you think I feel? She saved my life and made me her personal agent, and showed nothing but kindness how do you think I feel? You can tell the commander that Lusset is not the one attacking X-COM."

Ammelia wiped the tears from her eyes, "I'll tell her... at least I know that Lucett had nothing to do with EXALT..."

"Good, I don't want the commander to think a dead woman is attacking her. I'm sorry for your lost by the way."

"We'll be sure to give Lucett a proper funeral after this is all over..." Ammelia said sadly.

"I would like that, and i'm sure her daughter will to. Can you invite us to the funeral? If we live that long of course."

Ammelia stands up, fresh tears welling up in her eyes, " Of course... my dad will be glad to set it up..."

"Thank you very much for your hospitality, and don't worry about you getting into the action again, I'm sure your time will come. And sorry for the bad news."

" It's okay... I should probably get back to my exercise... Give myself a little time time think...", She said giving Eva a wave, " It was nice to meet you... despite the bad news..."

"It was good to meet you, and once again, sorry for the bad news."

Ammelia gave Eva a small wave before vanishing into the crowd of the Gym.

X-COM Headquarters, Somewhere in Siberia.
Primary Holo-Training Room

“So… what do you think Mr. Walker will be like?” Eve asked, fiddling with her computer.

Aya shrugged. “Not sure. Morrigan had a lot less to say about him, and knowing her, it’s because he’s something of a mystery to her. But I doubt he’ll be trouble. He’s a soldier, and he’s been trusted to lead missions.”

“I hope you’re right,” Eve muttered without looking up.

Desmond rode the elevator down to the new holo-room that had been installed. From what Ryan told him about it it was impressive to say the least. He flexed his metal hand over and over again, trying to loosen up for what he had told been training, though the specifics weren’t really hashed out. He looked over his attire of gray jacket, gray cargo pants and grey sneakers. It seemed the only colors allowed on base were any shade of gray, olive or blue. He stepped out of the elevator as the doors opened and strode into the immense room.

Eve and Aya turned to look at Desmond. “Mr. Walker, I presume?” Aya extended her hand. “Lieutenant Aya Brea, at your service.”

Desmond took her hand and shook it. When she went to pull back her hand he held on and closed his eyes for a split second. “So, you are the one Atka was talking about?” He said looking at the woman.

Aya smiled. “I am. I gave her a little advice on her… unique abilities. Though any progression she made was more of her own doing then anything else.”

He pulled away his hand and scratched his stubble. “Well this isn’t exactly something you can just teach, she has made progress since I last trained her.” He looked over and noticed the other girl. Raising an eyebrow he asked. “It seems both of you are talented, to think a couple months back I thought I was the only one.” He stated in a gruff voice. “So...what is the meaning of this meeting?”

Aya shrugged. “Just… wanted to make a proper introduction. As you said, an ability such as yours isn’t exactly common. And mine comes from a somewhat different place than yours, but it is similar enough. I don’t know if I can help you at all, or if you would even want my help, but if you did, I wanted you to know I’m here. I… know how such an unusual ability can make you feel like an outcast.”

“I have been an outcast all my life, not much has changed. As for help, I think our roles should be switched, I have spent years doing research but even then the mystery of psionics is still an ever growing one.”

Eve started to say something, but Aya held up a hand. “So, you feel you could… school me, as it were. Alright. How about a demonstration of how far along you’ve come.”

He crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow. “Anything you had in mind? I imagine you wouldn’t come unprepared.” He said stoically.

Aya nodded, walking to Eve’s side. “Your abilities are of a more physical kind, right. Destructive rather. So, why don’t we have you break something. Just let Eve know what you want, anything that would show off the full extent of your power, and you can… blow it up.”

He tilted his head puzzled. “Does the Commander know what you do down here? Last time I went all out…” He thought for a moment. “Let’s just say if she knew she wouldn’t be too happy to have me around.”

Aya grinned. “The Commander has given me full discretion on this matter. Don’t worry, as long as you don’t kill us, I won’t say anything that’ll get you in trouble.”

Eve chuckled. “Won’t say anything if he kills you, either.”

He grinned at the smaller girl and turned to the empty room pulling up his sleeves. “Make a boulder, about 15 by 15 feet.”

Eve nodded. “You got it, chief.” With a few keystrokes, the holographic boulder appeared ten feet ahead. After a few more keystrokes, the boulder’s glowed for a few seconds, then turned to a normal hue. “There, the computer has used the force fields to simulate the same structural integrity of a boulder that size made from the materials around this base.”

“Interesting…” He looked it over a few seconds and he started to seethe, building up energy. The dark red light up a small portion of the room and he held out his right hand, a red, fast rotating orb appearing in his hand. He took a deep breath and eyed the boulder. He ran towards it and with a jump, he slammed the orb into the rock, at first it started to drill into the rock but about halfway the rock exploded into a hail of gravel and Desmond land on his feet, dissipating the orb. “Well a new personal best...so, how is that for a start?” He yelled over to the girls.

Eve giggled to herself, looking up at Aya. Aya held a hand up to quiet her, and smiled at Desmond. “That was very good. I know I’d hate to be at the business end of that attack. You said new personal best? So how much have you improved over… say, the last year?”

“Well, last year my psionics weren’t red or anywhere near this powerful. Before I would burn out all my energy and numb my am from using that but now I can use it fine. Though extended periods of time still drain me bad.” He cracked his knuckle, staring at the girls.

Aya nodded. She glanced at Desmond’s arm. “I heard that little accessory is new. Has it hindered your efforts at all? Could you show me the same attack with the arm, if you aren’t too tired.”

He shook his head disappointed. “Unfortunately, that won’t be possible, I am unable to use psionics on my left arm, a problem I am in the middle of solving.” He made a fist with his metal hand and looked up. “Although I can still physically enhance the metal, making blows more powerful, and I can still use a minor part of my mental abilities…”

Aya slowly walked up to Desmond, watching his metal limb as she did so. “I know you feel… with your superior research… that I might not be of much help, but maybe I could give you a suggestion? You wouldn’t have to use it, of course, but who knows? I might get lucky.”

He shrugged his shoulders. “Any little bit may help. I don’t know how far off from finding the answer I am as of now, could be days, could be decades…”

“Mr. Walker, I’m not sure if you abilities work the same as mine, but I feel that you might be focusing too much on the physical, and not enough on the mental.” Aya lifted his arm. “This arm, this object, is keeping you back, yes? But why?” She lifted his real arm. “But this one does not. Now, the manifestation of your abilities comes from a buildup of mental and metaphysical energy in the mind that you then concentrate, through your nervous system, into your palm. As I see it, the way the cybernetics work is almost identical to your normal biology.” She tilted her head, releasing his arm. “I’m sure anything you can do with your arm will help, but have you considered that part of it, even a small part, could be… psychosomatic?”

He let out a deep breath. “I have tried and tried again but I still get the same results. If it is because of psychosomaticism, then why have I been able to do this stuff before on my organic half, but not the same for the inorganic half? Could emotions really play into this more than just physical and mental?” He held up his hand and looked at his reflection in the metal.

Aya nodded. “This power of yours, it is an extension of your mind. Your pain, your mental turmoil, your doubt. All if it holds you back. If, deep down, you don’t think it’ll work, then it never will, no matter how much you alter the arm. You said you could manifest minor abilities in it, right? If it was the arm, and only the arm, holding you back, you wouldn’t be able to do anything.” Aya placed her hand on Desmond’s shoulder. “Listen, you’re right. You aren’t going to solve this problem overnight, but you’ll never solve it if you don’t truly believe you can. Have faith in your own abilities. You’ll get it, and part of it will come from as much a need as a want.”

Eve shook her head. “Just like a super saiyan…” She muttered to herself.

Desmond took her hand and took it off of his shoulder. “I can’t...my emotions are not something that I can control easily. There has only been two people I have shown my pain too, and even then it doesn’t help.” He looked down. “If you want me to show you what I mean then I will, just brace yourself, Atka was lucky to survive it…” he muttered.

Aya nodded. “If it will help you, then go ahead.”

He put a hand on her head and he closed his eyes, concentrating on opening his mind. In an instant, memories of pain, sorrow, loneliness, and loss surged through her mind. Fragmented memories came and went, too fuzzy to make them out all at once and with one final surge, it had ended. Desmond falling to his knees and hands, breathing heavily letting off a wispy red aura.

Aya let out several struggled breaths, struggling to catch her breath. The pain she experienced from Desmond was nearly overwhelming, but she had sadly experienced it before. She knelt down, extending her hand. “You have such a burden on your soul. One that threatens to overwhelm you. But in that darkness, I saw a few whispers of light. One in particular was stronger than the rest. Perhaps it is with this one that you will find what you need, a release from your emotional turmoil.”

He took the hand and stood up. “My only fear is that it is too much for anyone else to handle.” He stretched his arm. “You never did explain to me what you guys are.”

Aya shrugged. “Just some old friends of the Commander, trying to help out a fellow…” She grinned. “...a fellow weirdo.”

He let out a smile. “The Commander...have friends? I never thought I would hear the day.” He sat down on the floor. “What about you over there? You haven’t said much.”

“Me?” Eve smiled. “I don’t have as much experience as my sister, though I haven’t practiced as much. I have a few tricks up my sleeves, though.”

He rolled his eyes. “What is it with siblings and their rivalries?”

“Rivals?” Aya walked up to Eve, placing a hand on her shoulder. “We aren’t rivals, trust me. And she has it better. She gets to be the normal one.”

Eve mimicked Desmond’s rolling eyes. “Please, normal is so over-rated.”

He raised an eyebrow. “How normal do you mean? If I am not mistaken you both have psionic capabilities.”

Aya thought for a minute. “Yeah, but, we don’t have your kind of research and experience. Like you said, you should probably be teaching us.” Eve rolled her eye again.

He stood up. “I could if you wanted?”

Aya shrugged. “Maybe later on. For now, we’ve got a bit of cleaning up to do. But we’ll check with you later on.”

He nodded at Aya and looked to Eve. “Be sure to visit my lab if you ever want solo tutoring. It is not far, if you want directions.”

Aya nudged Eve in the shoulder, and Eve smiled. “I-I… might just do that…”

He nodded and headed back to the elevator. “Be sure to tell the Commander I said hi.” He added, the doors closing as he ascended.

As the elevator lifted Desmond away, Eve folded her arms in frustration. “Why did you lead him on like that? Didn’t you care that he was talking down to you?”

Aya shook her head. “He wasn’t, he just didn’t know. He probably has a loner personality, and doesn’t understand that…”

“Well, I thought he was pretty arrogant.” Eve interrupted, typing on her computer. “He just assumed that because he was doing research that he had nothing to learn from someone else. And it never occurred to him that the Commander might have had a reason for him coming to you, not the other way around.”

“Don’t be so critical, Eve,” Aya said with a sigh as ten boulders, lined in a row, the same size as the one Desmond had destroyed, appeared a few feet away. “Give him time, and I’m sure he’ll learn to count on others more.” Her eyes glowed a faint greenish-blue as a large orb of energy formed in her cupped hands. She separated her hands, the orb growing until it was the size of her chest. She turned to the boulders, and a beam of energy shot from the orb, punching a hole with a twelve inch diameter through the first nine boulders and burning the surface of the third. “Hmm… guess I do need a little more practice. Used to be able to go through all ten…”

X-COM Headquarters, Somewhere in Siberia
The office of Commander O’Brien

Morrigan slowly tapped her fingers against her desk, still wondering how everyone might take the recent arrival. Her eyes darted between the door, expecting Atka’s arrival, and the child on the couch, slowly humming as she looks at a small book.

Atka walked in, wearing her typical shirt with the red maple leaf. "What did you need, si..." the Inuit woman trailed off, looking over at the child. Who...?

“Please take a seat, Atka. How are you feeling?” Morrigan smiled her usual casual smile.

The scout sat down. "Alright...if a little tired. Bad dreams and an upset Albert Foulke tend to do that to you," Atka replied, glancing at the picture, then back to the child, then back at Morrigan.

“Atka, I’d like you to meet someone important to me.” She motions to the blond girl on the couch. “Atka, this is Brigid O’Brien. Brigid, this is… ahem.” Brigid looked up from her book, putting it to the side and walking to Atka’s side. “Brigid, this is Atka.”

"Nice to meet you, Brigid," the Inuit woman said warmly. Her heart ached a bit as she thought back to her younger sister, who was not too much older than Brigid when she had last seen her.

Brigid looked back a forth between the two women. In an excited voice, she said, “Mommy said you got hurt doing her a favor, and she felt bad. A-are you okay now?”

"Yeah, it was nothing the doctors couldn't fix," Atka responded, unconsciously glancing at the faint circular scar on her upper right arm.

The blond child followed Atka’s gaze, and frowned. “B-but… I can still see where it hurt. They can’t fix that?”

"It's just a scar, it doesn't hurt anymore," the scout answered. "It'll fade with time, its already fainter than it would normally be."

Brigid smiled. “That’s good. But I still think you’re pretty with it.”

Morrigan chuckled nervously. “Um, Brigid, why don’t you go back to your book?”

Sorry, Commander. Didn't mean to upset her, Atka conveyed to Morrigan telepathically.

As Brigid returned to her book, Morrigan shook her head. Don’t worry, she’s just unusually empathetic for her age. Sorry if she was a little too… blunt. It comes With being so young.

I have at least some experience with that with my sister, Nouja, Atka responded.

Morrigan watched Brigid for a few moments. Finally, she turned to Atka and said out loud, “If that’s the case, then I’m sure you have an idea about how someone so small, so innocent, so… so insignificant to the world at large can be the center of your universe. Daughter or sister, they’re special to you.”

Atka nodded, her expression falling a little. "I haven't seen her in the four years since I left the village. I sent the village a letter to see how things are going, though."

“Did you hear anything back?” The Commander asked, looking concerned.

"Not yet...but its only been a few days. They have to take it out to an isolated village and then return the response, after all."

Morrigan nodded. “Well… I hope they get back to you soon.” She looked back at Brigid and slowly said, “I’m afraid I didn’t just ask you here for an introduction.”

Atka nodded. "What do you need?"

“Do you… can you think of a reason why… you’re only now meeting my daughter?”

Atka thought back to Nouja. "You...thought it would be unfair to us if she were here?"

Morrigan nodded. “Perceptive as always.” She bit her lip to keep it from quivering. “You can’t imagine… how hard that was for me. To know she was out there, and I could bring her to safety, but not wanting to alienate my men, to… insult them. And now that you’ve mentioned your sister, I… still have my reservations, but what is done is done.”

Atka frowned. "Morri... Comm... look. Your mental health is more important than anything. The aliens aren't going to go around targeting Inuit villages, and I've heard that X-COM does its best to protect people's families. We have our fears, but you have to be free from those concerns to do your job."

“You aren’t the first to tell me that, and that’s why she’s here.” The Commander leaned forward, nervously running her hand through her fiery hair. “And now that she is here, she’s gonna need to be watched. I

trust the staff and soldiers here enough to not do anything… crazy. But you can’t be too careful, and even without that to think of, I’m sure I don’t need to tell you the dozens of area’s on this base that she could get hurt in. But I can’t just trap her in my room either. She’d go stir crazy.”

"I can look out for her when I have the time," Atka said cautiously. "I know why you don't want Ayame to guard her, though." She has problems with filtering what she says, Atka added mentally.

Morrigan chuckled loudly. turning to her child, she said, “Brigid, dear, come here for a moment.”

“Yes, mommy.” Brigid quickly returned to Atka’s side.

“Listen love, I need you to stay with the people watching you at all times, okay.” Brigid nooded, and Morrigan added, “But, if you ever do get seperated from them, if you see Atka here in the hallways, I want you to go with her, and do whatever she says. She’ll keep you from getting in trouble.”

“Okay mommy,” the young girl responded, smiling at Atka.

Atka smiled again. "I'll have to introduce you to Taqukaq at some point. You've already met Shalquoir, but you haven't met my dog."

“Ooo…” Brigid’s eye’s lit up. “Is it a little doggy, or a big doggy.” She stretched her arms out to show her idea of the sizes she was thinking of.

"Big dog. He's a husky," Atka said dramatically, stretching out her hands.

Brigid turned to her mother. “Can I go see the doggy now, please?”

Morrigan shook her head. “Not right now, honey. But if Atka is willing, maybe she can bring him here the next time I call her.”

"I can do that," Atka said enthusiastically, feeling like an older sister again.

Brigid clapped her hands excitedly, rushing over to the sleeping cat in the corner and hugging her, much to the cat’s annoyance.

Morrigan smiled, and turned to Atka. “One last thing. I don’t expect you to turn Brigid into a second job. So, just in case you’re busy, can you suggest a few other people I should have Brigid look out for, should she not be able to find you?”

"Hmm...well, there's Sunny, Alice of course, Tom, Janina, Emily...though I don't recommend Kevin, he's got some vendetta against kids apparently," she said with a small grin.

Morrigan nodded, but seemed a bit concerned. “You were talking about the… hologram, right? Do you think it can be trusted with Brigid. It is a computer, after all.”

"Alice is someone Sunny created...I think we can trust her more than the other cat. Him...he's best left to his own devices."

Morrigan leaned forward slightly. “Are you sure, though. I don’t want to sound paranoid. I know it… she… looks and acts like a person, but…” Morrigan shook her head, smiling lightly. “No, never mind. I’m just being paranoid.”

"Hey, we have every AI movie ever to warn us about this stuff. We have precautions, I’m sure, right?"

“We do… but I need to be a bit more open minded.” Morrigan stood up, stretching her arm. “Thank you, Atka. As usual, you do too much for me with little in return.”

"I'm happy to be of service, Morr-" Atka bit her lip. "Sir."

Morrigan scoffed. “Atka… please, I know this might be hard for someone like you, but… just Morrigan, okay?”

Atka held up her hands in defeat, "Whatever you say, s... Morrigan,"

Atka's Letter to Nouja, sent a few days ago.

Dear Nouja,

I know its been awhile since I’ve said anything to you. I’’m really sorry about that. I wanted to keep in contact with you since some crazy things are happening and I’ve finally taken the time to say something to my dear sister.

If you have not heard, we’re at war with beings from space. Pretty crazy, huh? I joined up with a special band of warriors that fight them. It’s been going well, but there have been painful losses.

Tell me how you’re doing. How is life for you these days? Are mother and father doing as well as father told me they were? How is Katakutaq? I’d love to hear from you again, as well.

Its not that I didn’t care. I’d just been busy, and forgot what was important...and that’s family. Hope to hear from you soon, tell me about everything I’ve missed.

Love, your big sister, Atka

Collapsing Glacier - Atka Ipiktok

Atka Ipitktok stood outside in the place where she and Desmond often came to train, on that cliffside overlooking cold, rocky terrain. She closed her eyes, concentrating, the cold kept out by her parka. When the Inuit woman opened them again, they glowed a soft, light blue. She opened both of her palms, having the helixes of icy psionic power spread out, almost like whips. They extended a few feet, and Atka now felt like she could keep them stable at this length, maybe even further in time.

“Let’s see what I can do,” Atka said with a slight grin. She envisioned her icy helixes with that same power as before, and telekinetic force weakly started to wrap around the mindfray strands, the attack becoming something else entirely. The Inuit woman ran at the ravine away from the cliff, and swung her whips at the rock face. They ground in an inch or two, but then returned to Atka, hovering almost wrapped around her arms like chains.

Not good enough,
Atka lamented. Not when Desmond has an ability that can blow holes entire feet wide into solid rock. She swung again and again, trying to make the icy helixes tougher as they constricted to flow more like a blade, and the spike started to cover more surface area, extending up and down. Gradually, the telekinetic field was becoming stronger, but it was subtle. By the end of the hour, Atka sweating slightly despite the cold, they were able to cut an extra inch or two deeper than her first strike.

The scout stepped back, knowing she was at her limit with the vigourous training. “Well, its progress. I just need to practice this more often.” The icy helixes seemed to melt, but the ‘liquidized’ psionic energy never touched the ground, fading into nothingness before that. With a sigh, Atka began the arduous journey back down the cliffside, not having the inhuman endurance that Desmond Walker did to take such a route quickly and seemingly effortlessly.

When Atka returned to her room, she noticed someone had slipped a letter under the locked door. Madison and Ayame had still not returned.Atka knelt down and picked up the letter, taking it to her desk after taking off her warm coat. She opened it, and began to read the letter that was from her father.

[Dear Atka,

It is with great sadness that I must bring this news to you. I beg of you, do not despair...not when I know that you are involved in something so important. Our village… “was attacked by the invaders from beyond the sky,” Ipiktok had said as he wrote the introduction to the letter, and began to describe what had happened in detail.

-Beginning of Ipiktok’s Flashback-

A normal day for the Inuit people of the village known simply as “Far Wolf Shelter.” Men had returned from the hunt, and the sun had yet to set as it was so close to summer in the Arctic Circle. Seal meat was being cooked over fires as the Inuit sat around the fire, men telling tales of heroics, often exaggerated, and women sharing stories and legends, or praying to the great spirit in thanks for the food that was nearly finished.

Ipiktok sat with his family. His wife, Yuralria, was talking with her youngest daughter, Nouja, and her prospective husband, Pana. Ipiktok found himself wondering what his younger daughter Atka was doing at this time. His reverie was interrupted by a nudge from his friend Kangaq, father of a friend of Atka’s named Kataktaq.

“He seems like a good option for your lovely daughter,” Kanguq said approvingly to Ipiktok in Inuktitut. “Glad to see your family line will be continuing. I was worried when your eldest left.”

Ipiktok shook his head. “She had her own path that diverged from our simple one. That was her decision to make, not mine.”

“Of course. I didn’t mean to say anything to the contrary,” the hunter replied. “So, do you want first pick at the seal? I can save your family the best pieces…”

Ipiktok chuckled, and shook his head. “Let everyone else have a chance for once, Kanguq.”

The Inuit began to enjoy their meal, some of them finishing quickly and singing to add a lovely cadence to the evening gathering. The peacefulness of the night was interrupted by a pulsing, humming noise that was audible throughout the village. From the sky descended a round, metallic object, bigger than any structure in Far Wolf Shelter. Harsh whispers of suspicion and fear spread through the village, and without hesitation the warriors went for their weapons.

Ipiktok felt the blood drain from his face. “Yuralria, Nouja, get inside. Make sure everyone else that isn’t a warrior does as well.”

“F-father…” Nouja said fearfully. “Are they...the ones from beyond the sky?”

“Great spirit protect us...I hope not,” Ipiktok said as he went to retrieve his spear.

The Inuit warriors gathered in a defensive formation, their teamwork in hunting never more evident, though rarely did they ever fight in these numbers since the days when tribes would sometimes go to war. Those days were bygone. They waited on the southeast end of the village where the mysterious craft landed. From glowing doors, 3 types of invaders exited.

The first that came out were three gray men, who were diminutive, almost like gnarled demons with their large, callous eyes. They were followed by three terrifyingly human warriors carrying larger weapons that glowed green and hot than their short allies. They looked like the Inuit, but they were far too tall to really be human. Finally, a glowing, yellow-orange demonic figure stepped out, having no visible eyes. It seemed to be leading them.

“They have guns…” Kangaq warned his fellow warriors. “And they are likely stronger than anything we have ever seen. Let them come to us, fighting in the open fields would be slaughter.”

There was a collective nod, and the warriors hid and waited as the invaders advanced. The tall ones came first, followed by the gray ones. The ‘fallen angel’ showed no fear, leading along with the tall men. When they reached the village, the warriors ran out and charge them, spears at the ready. Many were cut down by burst of fiery green that seemed to melt whatever they hit like hellfire. However, one of the Sectoids was felled by a spear from Pana. He shouted victoriously, spurring on the remaining thirty-three warriors...only to be shot at point-blank by the Outsider.

“Pana!” Ipiktok cried out, and hurled his spear at the fallen angel. It stabbed into its arm, and the creature took the moment to pull it out, the wound sealing in seconds.

“Do not let his death be in vain, they can bleed, they can die!” Kangaq rallied his troops, and lead a head-on charge at the invaders from all sides. Some men clutched their heads as the Sectoids tried to drive them mad, while others died to fire from the Outsider and the three Thin Men. Kangaq wove out of the way of a blast, at the front with his men, and drove his spear into the chest of one of the infiltrators, killing the tall man. He ripped it out and followed up with a thrust at a Sectoid, whose purple stream went into his head, but had not effect. The illusions of his family dying only served to make the proud warrior furious, and his spear plunged into the monster’s brain.

Another Sectoid and Thin Man died to the rest of the warriors, whose ranks were running thin. The remaining Thin Man started to quickly move backward, as the Outsider, the fallen angel, pressed the barrel of its carbine into Kangaq’s chest. The warrior’s eyes widened as he realized he had only moments to live. Not...the worst way to die, defending my home, my family… he thought to himself. Everything went red and then quickly black as a plasma bolt tore through his chest.

The enraged Inuit warriors all plunged their spears into the Outsider, but it seemed to be unharmed. Before the spears could actually threaten to sever parts of the Outsider, the only chance at them harming it, its regenerative properties seemed to override the damage and melt the spearheads. The Thin Man spat poison on all of them, and the Outsider shot a few more before beating the rest, including the shocked Kataktaq, into unconsciousness.

Ipiktok and a few others had fled when they realized the fallen angel could not be harmed, not able to save the others but at least trying to save the women and children. They started to evacuate a good portion, but soon the invaders noticed their presence. Left with no choice, Ipiktok ran with who he could, only 22 people in total. The rest were captured by the aliens, and taken away in their flying disk.

-End of Ipiktok’s flashback-

“Including Nouja and Yaralria…” Atka read, her body going limp. Tears formed in her eyes. “W...why...why attack there, of all places…” She started to shake, and clenched her fists, trying to turn the sadness into anger.

Spikes of ice began to form in Atka’s hands. “...d...DAMN THEM!” Atka screamed, and her icy helixes shot out in whip form, cutting deep grooves into the desk in her anger. The Inuit woman breathed quickly as they retracted, and fell to her knees, weeping for her village and family.

Kangaq...Kataktaq...mother...Nouja...so many others lost to death or wose...why them...why me...

“A Dangerous Game called Trust”

A knock from came from outside David Cross’s room. “Sir, there’s a “Emma” here to see you. Won’t say her last name, but she insisted you would know her.”

David turned from his work and looked towards the door, “Thank you Frank, you can let her in.”

A young woman with long, dark blonde hair and blue eyes walked into the room. She was wearing a labcoat and casual clothing underneath. “Hello, Mr. Cross.”

“Good morning,” he said casually, looking the girl over, “You do look alot like her…”

Emma nodded. “Subject Negative Zero, also known as Elene Exalt, was designed with Lusett’s traits more in mind than the other genetic source. And I am her direct copy, Subject 158, codenamed ‘Emma.’” She takes off her contacts, revealing lizard-like, genetically enhanced yellow eyes

“It’s nice to meet you Emma, I trust that Elene told you about the terms of our deal?” David asked as a tall, dark-skinned man in a suit walked up and stopped a few feet behind her.

“I will not visit any part of your facilities that you do not desire me in,” 158 responded. “...Mr. Cross. I was asked to tell you something important, though both myself and my mistress fear your response. I have put myself in a position of vulnerability, which we hope will show you that we are serious about not wishing you any harm.” Despite her calm and seemingly emotionless demeanor, it was apparent that Emma was nervous, sweating slightly.

The dark-skinned man crossed his arms and looked down at her, not blinking or moving. “If you really want to prove to me that you mean my family and my company no harm, all you have to do is act like it. Follow my rules, stay where I tell you to, and keep yourself out of the public’s view. That’s all I ask,” David said, taking mental note of her nervousness.

“...Mr. Cross, are you aware of an organization called EXALT?” Emma asked.

“An organization, no, but a family, yes.” David took a quick swig of his coffee and set it back on his desk.

“The organization EXALT is run by the man that killed Lusett Exalt that Elene told you about. He has commandeered our technology, including the ability to clone humans. His army of clones is based upon his DNA, and they are fighting an organization called XCOM, which I believe you may be aware of based on data that A.V.A.N.I.X has gathered,” Emma explained. Not the entire truth, but he doesn’t know that, Avanix added in Emma’s head via similar implants to Elene’s.

His look turned more serious, “I’m not sure I like your A.I. spying on me… Isn’t that what I told her not do?”

Emma clasped her hands together. “I will be honest with you, Mr. Cross. Avanix did not pry into your own information, but merely drew conclusions by amassing data available. Based on the last time your daughter was home, and information that we have gathered about XCOM’s battles with the aliens, we believe we know where she went.” Emma raised a hand, seeing David’s rising anger. “But please, understand, this is why I’m telling you about what Viktor is doing. We have a common enemy in Viktor Dorian, and the Mistress is trying to bring him down so that Ammelia Cross might be safe.” And so we can avenge Lusett.

The dark-skinned man shifted one of his arms slightly, making it so that it was barely noticeable. David Cross sat quietly in his chair, looking at the girl. “So… You know where my daughter is… This puts me in a difficult situation… For all I know Viktor could be listening to us right now, If so, you just put my daughter in serious danger…”

“I know that is impossible due to Avanix and the fact that for all Viktor Dorian knows, Subject 158 was a failure in the cloning process, and is currently deceased. However, I understand you have no way to prove that yourself. Additionally, neither Elene nor Viktor know where the XCOM base is specifically, and only Elene and I know that Ammelia Cross is part of that project shrouded in mystery.” Emma sighed. “If you will not trust me, then I accept that I may die here. I only fear that mother may grieve my passing.”

“I… I’m not going to just kill you… I can’t help but put myself in your mother’s shoes…” He said, considering his options, “ I will… Continue with our arrangement… But I’m adding one more condition…”

“Name it, and I shall most likely agree. I do apologize for putting you under all this stress, and without a direct line to my mother,” Emma said, frowning.

“I am going to examine everything you try to send to your mother… If I feel that it is acceptable, I will pass it along to her.”

Emma’s frown deepened. “I...should make you aware, you will need some help setting up that system. Consider this another ‘leap of faith’ I’m taking by telling you this. I have implants within my brain that allow me to communicate with Avanix. It is possible to disable them, and I will do so in a way that you know they are as soon as possible, to make you feel more comfortable with this situation.”

“Thank you,” he said, his tone finally lightening up, “My friend behind you will give you a map of the places you are authorized to go. I will also have him oversee you every second that you’re here.”

The dark-skinned man walks in front of her and silently passes her the map, the restricted areas, marked with a red X.

Emma nodded. “And finally...know that you will have access to the advances we make on technology together. And that ideally, Elene will keep them to herself, and Viktor will fall behind. Again, I apologize Elene couldn’t be here in person...Viktor…” Emma clenches her fist. “Viktor sent her along with some of his clones to a crashed UFO, and she was badly wounded in the process…”

“ I’m sorry, but if you want to send her letters, I’ll have to look over those too. You understand.”

Emma nodded. “And if you want to discuss anything, I can set up a terminal to where AVANIX can patch you through. She should be recovered in time due to the Tz6...I’ll show you the advances we’ve made so far when you have the time. I can’t give you access to the alien equipment we recovered, as that’s in Viktor’s hands...but I can let you know all about it.”

Subject 158 gave David a serious look. “And...my only real condition is this: Do not inform XCOM of what we are doing here. I don’t think they would care that mother doesn’t support Viktor. For all we know, they would turn on us. If Elene could trust them, she would have attempted to go to them for help a long time ago. But, because you were friends with Lusett Exalt...Elene believes she can trust you. And based on what I can tell, I believe her.”

“So… How much can I tell them? They’re going to want something.” he said, rubbing his head a little.

Emma tapped her fingers on her leg. “If they know I’m here they could come for me, Mr. Cross. I’m worried that whether you tell them Elene’s being forced to work with Viktor against her will or not she’ll be a target either way…”

“What if I just tell them about Viktor? I don’t have to mention you do I,” David said, smirking slightly.

Emma nodded slowly. “That...could work. Tell them that you have an informant within EXALT that is giving you information about Viktor Dorian that was friends with the woman he killed, Lusett Exalt, but cannot say anything further because she fears for her life. That way...if EXALT falls and it puts my Mistress’s life in danger, she can perhaps use that as a bargaining chip. It may not be effective, but it is at the very least something helpful to have should things come to that.”

“Alright, “ He said, the stress of the situation lifting off his shoulders, “ I’ll send them their info at the end of the week.”

Emma smiled slightly, though she didn’t seem to be conscious of the rare expression. “Thank you, Mr. Cross. Knowing that she’ll have access to facilities and staff like yours to continue her creator’s research, and thus fulfill her purpose, is something that will be good for Elene to hear when she recovers.”

“If you need anything feel free to ask my friend Dorian,” he said, pointing to the Dark-Skinned man, “Just don’t be surprised if he doesn’t say anything, he is extremely quiet around people he doesn’t know.”

Emma nodded, and stood up. Thank goodness we might be able to do this without having to deceive him that much, Avanix thought with relief. “Do I have sleeping quarters in the building you’re giving to me?” Emma asked curiously.

A Penny for your thoughts

Damn, if only if we could figure out where they are operating from, then we could nail them for once. Still, with what we've had to deal with, I don't think I could be prouder of everyone. If only I could do something to boost morale around here. Hmm... well, we're barely using the original shooting range with the new one built down below. And it does have those holo-projectors installed. The Council might not like the diversion of resources, but maybe I can do something with that...

...three eggs, then stir vigerously... Oh, he's gonna love this. I mean, I hope he does. He'll say he does, but he'll say that even if he doesn't. What I wouldn't give to be able to read his mind. Whatever, I'll just have to make sure it is so good, he couldn't possibly not love it. I wish I could do something more. I'm sure that he still has no idea how much more I need him then he probably needs me. The both of us need him, in fact...

Hmm... is this the best I have. Though I guess it is already revealing enough. I don't want to thing I'm some kind of tramp, at least no more then he probably already does. At any rate, I hope she doesn't mind covering for me today. We just got back to work, and she said something about researching... some electric skin power or something. Man, I wish I had her smarts...

And... done. Wow, these new SHIVs sure can take a beating. Still, I wish they were a bit more maneuverable. Defense is nice, but I should also try to make a more offensive one. Hmm... what if I could incorporate the technology from that flying disc thing. Where did I put those reports?

JESUS! Is this really what they have to put up with EVERY TIME they go on a mission. I have a new found respect for FUCKING DAMN IT... for the men and women fighting out there. But soon I'll be joining them. I'm not entirely sure I have what it takes, but just you OH< YOUR MOTHER! ...just wait until I get a chance. I promise you, if we hit the field together, no one is gonna lay a hand on you, not as long as I'm there to protect that cute little butt of yours...

Wow, I can see why she needed me. So many requests, and no time to fulfill them with all that is on her plate. But, if I can ease this burden, we could redouble our efforts and win this thing in no time. And she already seems to be feeling better. She even brought the little one here...

She is SO CUTE. Oh, if only I could play with her every now and then. Maybe I'll get my chance. Someone that cute is gonna need a friend, right? Especially on a base like this. And maybe my new friends can join me. Can't forget my other work though. Sis is gonna be counting on me, and it is good to finally get some decent work. Stupid, slow aging body...

Ooo, upgrades. Maybe I can get a new change to my appearance. I like giving her someone to connect to, but I'd like a form that people will take more serious. Maybe I'll ask her the next time she activates me. It couldn't hurt to ask... right?

For This Night, and All the Other Nights To Come Part 1 (Guest writer Gemini as Lily and Avanix)
XCOM Base, Siberia
2200 Hours

It was dark and cold in the room Desmond was in. For some reason, Elizabeth had asked him to spend the night with her and she had fallen asleep on him. She was doing this more frequently and he didn't know whether he enjoyed it or was slightly annoyed by her persistence. In a way, he didn't mind her childish demeanor, in fact he kind of found it cute the way she would make faces and pop in with such enthusiasm. He admired her for what he could never be, although there was a hint of jealousy. He closed his eyes, hoping sleep would come.

Subject 156 sat at her computer, in the endless toil of researching the alien artifacts recovered from Ireland and Saudi Arabia. She glanced up at her mother...or rather, her sister, as Vee said Elene thought of her creations in that manner. "...get well soon..." she whispered, a rare hint of emotion in her tone.

Lily, it would appear that the conqueror is paying us a visit, Avanix warned.

Lily glanced over at the staircase, her expression returning wholly to the blank stare she always seemed to have.

Viktor strode down the staircase, his usual scowl on his face and he walked up to Lily. “So if I am not mistaken you are 156, I heard your ‘mother’ there has a way to get in contact with Desmond. I want to use it...now.” In a demanding tone.

Lily looked him up and down. We do not have a choice, do we, Avanix?

No, but tell him you need to set it up first, Avanix suggested. We need to warn him.

Lily nodded. "I will set up the communication now." She put on the headset. Desmond. Viktor is going to speak with you. Say nothing that will endanger Elene or her activities.

Desmond squeezed his eyes, even though they were already closed. Wait, what do you mean? Why would he contact me?

I have no idea, and asking an oafish anger-driven boar such as Viktor what he wants invites conflict, Lily responded without even sounding angry.

He let out an angered sigh. Put him on if he insists, Elene can trust me...

"Calibrations complete," Lily said. "Phrase: 'All yours' seems appropriate for this situation." She offered Viktor the headset. She went back to her computer, working as Avanix fed her the conversation mentally.

He rolled his eyes in annoyance and grabbed the headset, and sat away from Lily. He closed his eyes and said in his bellowing voice. Hello, Desmond.

Desmond loathed the sound of his voice, it never leaving his mind over the years. Viktor...I thought you died you son of a bitch.

Oh come now, don’t be like that. It wasn’t my fault that foolish girl had locked me up, but now I have fixed that problem.

I heard, not only do you ruin lives, but you also kill defenseless women too.

What have I done to deserve such hostility from you, after all we are broth…

We are not, Viktor. All I share is his DNA, nothing else. You made me into a monster, you experimented on me like I was just a lab rat! So tell me why I hate you.

Even though Viktor would normally go mental, he kept a calm demeanor. We both know that isn’t true. I did it to make you stronger, besides it was on the orders of little Miss Exalt that you were modified.

You still went along with it. Let me make one thing clear between us Viktor, we are not the same.

He gave a faint smile. You know your voice is exactly the same as his was. For years in that cell I heard his voice over and over but now that I can finally hear you...it fills me with joy.

Desmond was caught off guard by Viktor’s response. No matter what you think, I will never consider you a brother. You are just a scientist who got in way over his head. It was your fault I am here today.

Yes, that is exactly what I like to hear, the fire...the passion. My real brother never had that, you are even better than he ever was. There is something I want to tell you Desmond…

Desmond’s chest was filled with anger and he curled his fist. What makes you think I want to hear it?

Viktor continued on. I am going to remove you from XCOM, so you can take your place by my side.

Desmond’s eyes widened in horror, his heart beating rapidly. Y-you wouldn’t dare…

But this is what you need. I can have you wasting your potential on that little rag tag band of misfits and lowlifes. You deserve to be with me when I reshape the world as we know it.

You listen here you bastard, and you better... listen up good! I will never join you. We are not the same and I will never betray the ones who have become my friends…

Oh but you already have. Have you forgotten your true reason for being there. You are there under the intention of espionage, how would your ‘friends’ think about that…

I-I think about it everyday.

Do you really think they would accept you? You are a clone of my design, I am the only one who would understand you. You need me Desmond.

But...I, I-I don’t…

You need to realize exactly what is going on Desmond. I will give you time to think about what I have said, and maybe you will finally realize what the true answer is. Viktor took of the headset and placed it down on the table, walking out with a smile on his face.

Desmond was at a loss for words. He didn’t know how to respond to what had happened. He slipped out of Elizabeth’s arms and walked out the door with no regard of the girl. When she woke up she rubbed her eyes and raised an eyebrow. She slipped out of the covers and went after him.

Solace in a Friend

XCOM Headquarters, Somewhere in Siberia
May 25th, 2000 Hours, Local Time

Ayame slowly made her way to her room, sore from a day of training, but feeling better after a quick shower. She raised an eyebrow at the depressed looking dog, sitting outside of the room. “What’s got you down, Taq?” She asked, crouching down.

The husky looked up slowly at Ayame, then at the room. After a long pause, he moved to the side, allowing Ayame to pass. Ayame’s heart sunk a bit, and she slowly opened the door. “Um… Atka? Everything all right?” Come to think of it, I haven’t seen her all day… I don’t think anyone has…

There was no audible response, but Ayame quickly noticed Atka lying on her bed, staring up at the top bunk silently. The table was marked with deep grooves in the simply crafted but sturdy wood.

Oh, God… I’m no good at this… Ayame slowly sat down next to her vacant eyed friend. “A… Atka… What is it?”

Atka looked over at Ayame, the skin around her eyes having a red tinge to them. Her brown eyes that were turning blue gradually seemed duller than normal. "You know...how I told you I came from a village in Nunavut, right?" she began, her voice a hoarse whisper.

Ayame slowly nodded. “Something… happened to your village? Or… y-your family?”

"It...doesn't exist anymore," Atka finished in a shuddering tone. "Father...told me the invaders came there...killed half of the village, and took most of the rest away. Including...m-my s-sister...and m-mother..."

Ayame’s eye sunk, her expression almost as grim as though she had heard bad news about her own loved one’s. “What… y-your father… is he okay?”

"He's one of the only ones that escaped...him and twenty two out of more than two hundred people..." Atka said with anger beginning to surface. "Taken by the same damn aliens I had the nerve to tell Albert we could save! What a damn fool I was to think that..."

“No… no, you are not.” Ayame grasped her young friend’s hands. “Don’t start doubting yourself just because…” Ayame searched for something to say. She squeezed Atka’s hands tighter. “You said captured, right? Are you sure you mother and sister were captured?”

"The aliens are probably doing god-awful things to them wherever they were taken...I had a dream the other night,...that someone like me was suffering at their hands...and I'm starting to doubt that's all it was. It was the night after the village was..."

“Some kind of premonition?” The older Asian woman thought for a moment. “Maybe we can use that. I mean… I’m not making light of what they might be going through, but we’ve found survivors before. Maybe we’ll find them, and maybe these dreams will help us do just that!”

"It...wasn't clear enough for that. I just dreamt of a Thin Man talking to a girl like me, her begging him to not let her be hurt… and then..." Atka said the rest in a small voice. "They cut her open, but not to kill her...i-it was worse than that..." … Atka buried her face in her pillow. "I think they were doing that to my s-sister N-Nouja..."

Ayame’s eyes started to water, not only from the thought of the suffering her friend’s sister might be going through, but from how she was failing to do anything for her. “Atka… I don’t…” She stood up suddenly, bowing her head slightly. “Atka, please, I swear to you, I will find Nouja! I will not rest until I see her, and your mother, safely at your side! Even if it cost me my own life, they will not get away with this!”

Atka looked up at Ayame pleadingly. "Don't say that...I don't want to lose you too...and there isn't anything you can do right now. We don't even have an outsider captive...because those...fu...those idiots that just shot the Outsiders the last time we ran into them." Her fists clenched in frustration.

Ayame grasped Atka’s shoulders, a tear running down her cheek. “Then that’s what we’ll do! You and me, the next time one of those ship dares show itself, we’ll storm it, and take one of those glowing bastards back, even if we have to drag it back here, kicking and screaming.” She looked deeply into her friend’s eyes. “Please, Atka, there… th-there isn’t much I can do besides fight. But I promise, I won’t let them get away with this.”

Atka hugged Ayame tightly. "...just...don't be s-sad like me...I feel bad...to do this to you."

Ayame chuckled lightly. “I wish… w-wish you didn’t have to feel like this either. But there is something… strangely nice about feeling like this because someone else is down. So don’t worry about me. I lo… I like you too much to let you go through this alone. I’m here for you, and I’ll be here until the day we find them, and cave in the face of each one of those son’s of bitches that took them.”

Atka didn't say anything further, just holding onto Ayame tightly to quiet her fears and doubts by taking refuge with her friend.

Nicolás Jiménez
The Greens Hotel
London, England
11:22 PM

Nico walked down the abandoned streets in downtown London, everyone shacked up or out hunting for aliens. He dragged long on his cigarette, feeling miserable with the eternal cloud cover and damp, cool night air. There was no natural light, neither moon nor sun, just the asphalt reflections of the dimly glowing street lamps wherever they were scattered. It was nothing like home. He remembered the bureaucrat’s words as they sent him here.

“We don’t need to hire you anymore, but someone else does. What’s waiting for you there, it’s big. More important than staying here.”

At the time he was thinking bigger guns and more money. He didn’t think about how cryptic it was until he was already on the plane. He looked up at a dimly back-lit stone sign above him, “Green’s Hotel.” He wondered if he had the right address, or if he’d traveled up the entire world to just get a room. He flicked his cigarette away and walked into the warmly lit lobby, hearing the subtle sound of a piano in a far off room. He already felt out of place, not having showered for two days and in a rather ragged black coat. He walked up to the concierge sitting patiently at a large marble desk.

“Your name, sir?” the British man asked.

Nico placed a small leaflet on the table, given to him by the bureaucrat. “Nico Jiménez,” he stated in his hoarse voice, “I think I’m expected by someone.”

"Ah, yes, Mr. Jiménez…” he reached under the desk and gave him a key-card, “you are to take the elevator to the 6th floor, then use the stairway to go to the next floor up, and then use the card to get through.”

“’Get through’?” he looked at the key-card, noticing there was no number on it.

“Have a good night, Mr. Jiménez,” he said, looking down at his desk.

He walked away, feeling put off by the odd little man at the desk. He followed his instructions though, taking the quiet elevator up to the top floor and using the staircase, arriving at the card reader. His instincts naturally thought that he was walking into a trap as he saw the words “Roof Access” painted by the card reader. He swiped it regardless and walked outside onto the roof. The first thing he saw was a woman in a coat, not unlike the one he was wearing himself.

She had long, dark blonde hair that was cut poorly, and had blue eyes. The woman in question was very young, perhaps eighteen or twenty at most. “Nicolás Jiménez, twenty-nine years of age, from Colombia, known to be a hired mercenary,” she said analytically, looking over him.

“You have me at a disadvantage, miss,” he said calmly, placing his right hand by his waist.

“If you are expecting me to be some form of law enforcement, you are mistaken,” the woman said cooly. “There is no need to draw your weapon. You would not be able to fire before me.”

“Maybe not law, but the government did send me to you,” he replied.

“Incorrect. The Colombian authorities will be surprised to find that you disappeared on an order they did not give, and only you and I know of where you went,” the young woman replied. “Their informations network is sorely lacking in security,” she clarified, though there wasn’t a hint of pride or any other emotion in her voice as she spoke.

“Maybe you could enlighten me with what you are, then,” Nico said, “and then we can work on why I’m here.”

“I am Subject 158, codenamed Emma. A clone of a clone,” Emma explained. “And my mistress has need of you.”

Nico looked at her skeptically. “Clones? Mistress?”

Emma nodded. “I am one of three clones designated to serve as my creator’s personal aides. She tasked me with meeting you, since it is currently impossible for her to do it in person. I will not divulge sensitive details until I have your cooperation, but I have an offer for you. Allow us to use you as a template to create a male line of clones, and we will make it worth your while.”

“Template?” he asked, “what, are you going to collect my hairs, or something? How much is this worth, exactly?”

“All we need is to copy your DNA and create clones from it. The process will not harm you, and the rewards for it vary...if possible, we’d like to ensure your continued support after the process, but the likelyhood of that seems debatable,” Emma replied. “In addition to money, it is possible we can do other things for you. Genetic enhancement, for instance.”

“I only jump for money,” he stated, “but we can talk about barters once I see your operation.”

“The necessary amount can be provided easily.” Emma looked him in the eye. “So, do you agree to do this?”

“I’ll see what you have,” Nico said. “Does this cloning operation of yours have a name?”

“The female line is called the “Eve Project” in honor of Subject 1. This one would be called the “Adam Project,” Emma answered.

Nico walked towards her and held out his hand diplomatically.

Emma tilted her head slightly, and then realized what he was doing. She shook his hand.

“I guess I’ll be your Adam, then,” he said.

For This Night, and All the Other Nights To Come Part 2
XCOM Base, Siberia
2200 Hours

Elizabeth stalked through the dark of the hallways with the stealthiness of a cat. She had lost Desmond half way into her tailing and she couldn't pick up a trace of him anywhere. She had finally gotten an idea and she headed to his lab. When she arrived at the door she opened it and it was still dark. "Well, if I know him he is probably training somewhere, but where?" She went to the gym and found he wasn't there and even the guards at the entrance of the base said no one had left. She sighed and put a hand on her chin. "Think Ellie, think. If I was a semi-depressed loner who has all the qualities of a workaholic, where would I go?" She racked her brain for ideas when she saw two soldiers walking down the hall in her direction.

"...new projector room is huge. It really is something, it can make almost anything for training purposes. The courses I ran were really hard." The two walked past her and she let out. "Thank you sense of coincidence." She ran down the halls and to an elevator, pressing a new button on the panel. As the elevator descended and the room came into view, she was awestruck at the size of it. Projectors lined every surface and the room was immense, and in the center of it, one lone person was in the middle of room surrounded by a dozen or so orange projections.

Desmond took a deep breath and took a stony face. "Begin simulation." He ordered and one of the figures advanced. He turned to meet his opponent and went to work on disposing of him. One by one he disposed of each hologram until they began to come at him in pairs. He let out punches, kicks, he dodged blows and weaved through the small crowd. The fight intensified as more and more came at him at the same time. He did his best not to use his left arm except for light attacks and blocks but eventually blows started breaking through more and more. Little by little they holograms knocked him down. One hard kick to the gut sent him flying back and he laid sprawled on the ground. The holograms seemed to stare at him and he used his built up anger to give him energy. He lifted his legs in the air and spun them around, using the momentum to get himself up. The holograms attacked once more and he stormed into the group.

Elizabeth stood amazed at the resolve he had, but horrified by the fact he let this kind of punishment befall him. She watched as he charged head first into the crowd of imaginary people and fighting with a ferocity she didn't even think was human. He disposed of them in pairs, taking care to use them against each other. When he was finished he was left out of breath, sweating heavily, and red marks all over his body. Looking like he had won, Elizabeth noticed that there were only 11 holograms on the ground. "Where is..." Before she could finish the missing one rushed Desmond from behind and when he turned towards it it hit him square in the head, sending him backwards. "Desmond!" She ran towards him and the hologram looked at her and dispersed with the others. She stopped and got down on her knees next to him. He had a red mark on his head but he was otherwise fine.

He looked up at her and put his arm over his eyes. "Well, shit..." He said in a pained voice.

Her eyes watery she said. "What? What is it?"

He smiled and looked into her eyes. "I didn't want to wake you, I wanted you to sleep."

She giggled and wiped her eyes. "What are you doing down here, why did you leave?"

He sat up and rubbed his neck looking down. "I-I just needed time alone..."

She gave an irritated look. "No, that is not an answer. You have too much time alone, something else is bothering you."

He got up and wiped off his pants. "It is nothing Rin..."

She pointed a finger at him. "Don't Rin me! You always shut people out. I like to thing I have a normal relationship but I don't. You are not around half the time and the other half is like you aren't fully there."

He looked down. "You probably hate me don't you..."

She let out a sigh. "I don't hate you Desmond, I just want to save you..." She stepped up to him and pushed his head up. "While there is still something left to save. You always look down, look up. If you always look down you will miss what is going on above you and that is something you don't get back. Now tell me, why are you training so hard?"

He looked up. "It is all I know. My whole life has been training and pain. If I was in pain, I trained. When I trained, I was in pain. No matter how hard I try, I always seem to fall a little further. Why must I be like this?" A tear formed in his eye.

Elizabeth's mouth fell open, a look of sadness across her face. "This is the first time I have ever seen you cry."

He looked over at her. "That is because I have no tears left, all the pain I feel has taken them away. Everything seems impossible, my life is just one never ending battle."

Elizabeth looked at her companion and she gave a stern look. "Then you know what, fight with all your might.." He looked at her with a shocked look and she took a deep breath gathering her courage. "Then use the pain you have and turn it into something wonderful. Do the impossible, see the invisible, touch the untouchable and break the unbreakable! Use the power you have inside you and use it in a way where you can make sure no one has to suffer. Fight the power Desmond! Don't give your pain control, control your pain!"

He looked at his left hand and then at his right. But in that darkness, I saw a few whispers of light. One in particular was stronger than the rest. Perhaps it is with this one that you will find what you need, a release from your emotional turmoil. Aya's words played in his mind and he looked at Elizabeth with a look of determination. You were the light Elizabeth, you are the reason I have to continue to fight. He gave a smirk and nodded his head. "Your right, my true power wasn't from my pain, it was because of my pain."

She smiled with a look of determination also. "Then let us fight this...together." She walked up to him and kissed him. Unlike the other times, he didn't just let it happen, he gave back the kiss as well. As the kiss grew, Elizabeth pulled away and she smiled sweetly at Desmond. "Come on, we need some real time together. She led him to her room, peaking in to make sure Penny was still working and she locked the door behind them.

That night was one of the very few Desmond had felt true happiness. Elizabeth curled up to him, her skin pressing against his as she slept heavily. No more would the darkness try to fill the void that had been left inside of him. Now, he had a light to guide his way.

The Best Kind of Friends

Elizabeth skipped down the halls of the base, in more of a happy mood than she usually was. She had finally done something real with Desmond and just like her, she had to either find someone to gossip or gloat to, whichever came first. She wasn’t paying attention and she crashed into a lab tech with green hair. Looking over she said. “Well, hiya!”

Alexia chuckled at her ecstatic friend. “Well… you sure are cheerful. What happened, did someone buy you a giant syringe?”

Her eyes lit up but her mouth quickly quivered. “Well not that you said that…” She shook her head and stared at her friend. “Can we talk in private?”

Alexia’s eyes lit up. “I-is this gossip? I love gossip! Jessie hates it, but my mom and I… sure, where… come on, we’ll go to my room.”

She hopped up and walked with her friend to her room and when the door was closed she blurted out. “I did it!”

Alexia’s eyes darted back and forth. Not wanting to admit she didn’t know what she was talking about, she said, “Well… that’s great! It’s about time. I… thought you’d never get around to it.”

Elizabeth stopped and laughed at her friend with a raised eyebrow. “Well it is not something you just throw around wildly! I just thought I should let you and Jessie know considering Jessie did sort...of...tell…” She sighed and looked down. “You have no clue what I am talking about do you?”

Alexia laughed. “W-well… yeah, of course I…” She frowned. “No… no, I don’t…”

She sighed. “Is Jessie in there, I want her to know as well.” She then muttered. “God knows I am not doing it twice with you…”

What is going on? Are you two drunk again?

“Yeah, she’s here.” Alexia grinned. “So what is it that you and Jessie did?”

That she and I… wait, is she saying…

Elizabeth jumped onto the bed and laid down. “Well, the thing is...well, um...how do I say this?” She laid an arm across her mouth. “I may have, sorta spent some time with Desmond last night…” She muffled out.

“What was that?” Alexia asked, sitting next to her.

I think she said…

I know, shush, I wanna hear her say it again.

She sighed. “I slept with Desmond last night…” She stated in a low voice.

Alexia shrugged, laying down. “Really? So he’s now as much as your friend as me, huh? Just don’t tell him I slept with you months ago, he might get jealous.”

Alex, don’t pick on her.

Oh, you be quiet. I’m having fun.

Elizabeth pointed a finger at her friend. “I resent that statement, I know for a fact nothing happened!” She whined playfully.

Alexia giggled, then started laughing hysterically. “Oh… my sides…”

Ellie waved her hands dismissively. “Yeah, yeah laugh it up now. At least I didn’t bust out redder than a fire truck when I talked about my first time...unlike a certain someone I know.” She poked Alexia’s ribs. “I know you hear me!” She yelled into her ear.

Alexia’s smile only widened, and after her cheeks swelled up from trying not to laugh, she gave up and fell to the floor, rolling in laughter.

Sh….SHUT UP! We… we can’t all be as loose and un-unashamed as you.

What? Oh, I’m sorry, I was too busy imagining your head as a bright red balloon to listen.

I hate you both, you know that!

Yeah, yeah, we love you too.

Alexia climbed back onto the bed, wiping away a tear and desperately trying to stop laughing long enough to carry on a conversation.

Ellie started to calm down. “So now that I am pretty sure Jessie won’t be speaking to me...what has been up with you? You know...other than the whole ‘what happens in Russia will probably stay with you the rest of your life’ discussion.”

Alexia shrugged. “Not much on my end.” She thought for a moment. “Jessie has been working on these new gene mods, and my friend Sunny has been trying to do something with the new flying saucer thing.” She scratched her head. “Oh yeah, we talked to Modya… I know you said besides him but… we talked to Modya and he said…” Alexia trailed off, realizing Elizabeth might not be as accepting about their relationship as Modya had been.

She poked Alex’s forehead. “Tell me…” She growled. “You can’t lead a girl on and not expect them to want to hear the rest! Come on!” She continually poked her head, saying “Tell me!” with each poke.

“Okay, okay.” The green haired girl sighed. “Truth is, I kinda have a thing for Modya too. And we let Modya know it, and he said that… the three of us… might be able to work things out.” She bit her lip. “Pretty weird, huh?”

Ellie shook her head. “Nah, but is about time, I was wondering if you three would figure things out. Would be pretty weird if there were two guys for one and a half girls, I am glad he accepts both of you…” She trailed off, not really knowing if she was helping.

Alexia grinned, suddenly reaching out and squeezing her friend. “You’re awesome, you know that?”

“I know, if I wasn’t then this relationship wouldn’t be fun.” She said mockingly.

Alexia reeled back, and shook Elizabeth’s shoulders. “Wait, so if you and Desmond did the horizontal mambo, does that mean he’s stopped being such a stick in the mud? Loosened up, even a little bit?”

“I ask the same with Modya, but yeah, he should be loosened up…” Her eyes widened and she exploded in color, covering her face. “That sounded worse than I intended!”

Alexia grinned evilly, tapping her friend on the arm. “He isn’t the only one… loosening, right?”

Ellie smiled wide and put her hands behind her head. “You tell me!”

Alexia shrugged. “Hey, I don't think it’s appropriate to compare our boyfriend’s prowess. After all…” Her grin widened, “...Modya would win.”

Elizabeth squeaked and put her hands on her ears. “Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop!” She rolled around on the bed.

Aleixa crawled on top off her friend, pulling her hands off her ears. ‘SOOOO, is this what Jessica looks like when someone is embarrassing her?”

Ellie stopped and put a finger on her chin. “No, she is usually a lot more squirmy, and red…” She then continued rolling around, breaking free of her friend.

I swear, if you two don’t stop, I’m gonna make you stop, and then I’m gonna tell Modya that you’re grounded from him for a week!

Alexia rolled her eyes.

Fine… Mom…

Alexia jumped to her feet. “Why don’t we get something to eat? We can catch up on everything, and maybe even share some… secrets and tips over a little lunch.”

Ellie whimpered and rolled off the bed and kept rolling till she hit the door and shot her finger in the air. “Onwards!” She exclaimed, giggling uncontrollably.

Call connecting...

I sighed, running a hand through my hair. Probably should see about cutting it, it’s getting a bit long. What’s taking her so long to pick up? A quick glance at the clock and a mental conversion indicated that it’d be late morning, and besides she doesn’t work today.

Call connected.
Remember to not disclose any information that would threaten operational security when on XCOM Phone Lines.

That message flashed across the screen for a scant few seconds, before being replaced with the visage of a blond, blue-eyed man, rugged in his features.

“Volk residence, Leon Ensslin speaking,” he droned in a faint German accent, before recognizing me.

“Hey Leon, it’s me,” I replied, giving a faint smile to my friend and neighbor.

“Oh, hallo there Albert. I assume you were calling to talk to Jane?”

“Aye. Where is she now?”

“She went out to get a few supplies, and asked me to watch the house and make sure the casserole doesn’t get ruined,” he said, “She should be back in a few minutes. Do you want her to call you back when she returns?”

I shook my head. “No, it’s fine. I’m kinda in a place that’s... difficult to call back.” I paused for a moment, and decided to try and make some small talk to pass the time, asking, “So, uh, how are Linda and the brat doing?” I could see Leon’s eyes light up in delight, almost ferally, and I unconsciously gulped.

“Linda is doing absolutely wonderful!” the man exclaimed in a show of pleasure that seemed at odds with his gruff appearance. “And little Elicia is a genius of a child! Only three years old, and she can already read! Here, here, I have a photo I can show you,” he said, hastily scrambling through his phone, before holding it up to the screen. It showed the brown-haired blue-eyed girl sitting on the grand-old rocking chair, a children’s book whose name I couldn’t quite read placed in her hands.

“W-wow,” I said, taken a bit aback by the German’s enthusiasm, “That’s quite the accomplishment.”

“I know, she has her mother’s brains, through and through. And Jane has been such help taking care of her when I’m out on a case and Linda is called out to the plant because something a schweinehund over there did.”

“Well, as long as Elicia doesn’t accidently call Jane ‘Mama’ she’ll keep on helping you three out,” I said with a smirk. “So how’d that Van Der Akker case go? You manage to book that asshole?”

“Oh, we got him, currently in the second week of trial. We all know he’s guilty, but the prosecution wants to flaunt all of their witnesses, so I’m being kept out of duty until it’s my turn. Personally, I think he’ll end up serving li-”

Suddenly the sound of a door slam echoed over the phone line, and that lovely voice rang out, saying, “Leon, I’m home! Did you remember to take out the casserole?”

“Ja, ja, I did! By the way, A-” the German spoke, but was interrupted.

“Did anybody call while I was out?”

“Well, Albert is on the line right now...” With an audible gasp, Jane burst out of the foyer and into the living room, bags of groceries still in hand.

“Albert! You finally called!” she exclaimed, rushing towards the screen.

“Yeah, war effort’s been keeping me kinda busy at the moment, haven’t had the time to get a message out to you,” I replied sheepishly with a half-truth, unwilling to admit the real reason for my lack of communication. “So how are things going over there?” I asked, trying to push the conversation forward.

“One second. Leon, be a dear and take these into the kitchen,” she said, passing off the rather full grocery bags to our neighbor, who slid out of view of the screen. “Oh, things have been going alright. I managed to get that promotion me and Bryan were jockeying for, so he’s been a bit snappy with me lately. Nothing I can do about it of course, not my fault that I had four more years of experience than him.”

“Hey, I told you that you’d get the promotion over that smarmy asshat. Not only are you more experienced but you’re twice as productive as pro’lly anybody there except that server technician, uh, what’s his name...”

“Kyle?”

“Yeah. Fastest keyboard of the West, that man, even if he can be a bit of an elitist prick about his choice of OS.”

“Indeed. Well, I don’t want to spend all your time talking about my work. How are things going over there?” Jane said, fiddling with a lock of her hair.

“Eh, led a mission recently, managed to bring everybody back alive, though not unhurt. Other than that, not sure what I can say, due to OpSec.”

“Right, I understand. So how have you been doing, personally? Have you made any friends?” she asked, a faint, mirthful smile present on her face.

“Where do ya think I am, summer camp?” I replied mockingly. She pouted slightly- and goddamn she’s been practicing that, my damn heart skipped a beat- but I continued, just to get that expression off her face, “Anywho, can’t really say I made too many friends. Acquaintances maybe, but nothing I’d really call friends. A couple too many heated arguments for that.” I rubbed the back of my neck nervously, remembering the argument in the waiting room with Atka.

“Well, I’m certain that everything will come together in time. After all, you out there are defenders of humanity and all that is decent in the world, strong bonds are naturally gonna form!” she replied, that oh so familiar glint of passion in her eyes displaying itself.

“Geez, you make it sound like we’re in a Marvel or 2000 AD comic,” I said, with a dismissive wave of my hand. “I’d probably say we’re closer to that old TV show UFO than that.”

“Really, is it that bad?” she said, concern creeping into her voice, “I mean, I know that Moscow was hit pretty hard by the aliens, but...”

Alright, better get this over with now. “Speaking of that, I’ve been meaning to ask you something,” I said, as I scratched my upper lip uncomfortably.

“What would that be?’

“I... kind of want you to leave the country,” I said, closing my eyes as I let that bombshell loose. I took her shocked silence as permission to continue, “They’ve been hitting urban centers pretty hard, and I don’t want to see you abducted, or worse. You can go back to Newfoundland and live with your brother and sister-in-law there. You’ll be nice and safe, as I doubt the aliens will attack a random fishing village.”

“Al, listen, I can’t do that! You know what he thinks of you!” she exclaimed.

Yeesh, I figured she would react pretty vocally, but this... “Yeah, I know. I kind of threw him through a window because he called me ‘a child-killing Islamophobe’. Bu-”

“Besides, I’ve got work, and I need to help Linda and Leon with Elly, and I can’t just pack up and leave!”

“Alright alright, I get it. I just want to get you somewhere safe. I don’t want to lose you as well...” I trailed off, sighing wistfully.

“I know that Al. But moving to another country, just on a whim? It’s too much. Give me a month or two to work things out over here, and I can maybe use some of our paychecks to buy a place out in Wales or something, somewhere remote enough that you won’t have to worry.”

“Alright,” I nodded solemnly, recognizing the logic in her words.

“Anyways, enough of that depressing stuff. What do you want to talk about, other than that?”

Pausing for a minute to think, I replied, “Well, how is the garden?”

“Oh you would not believe how pretty it is this year, those roses are in full blossom, and...”

How good to hear your once again, my love. That was the thought that filled my head as we talked away those short hours, filling it with anecdotes and fond words. Truly I am blessed to have you.
