End of Madness: The Final Straw, Part One
"We understand that you succeeded in your mission, but we have concerns about your leadership potential. It is evident from the recent footage, combined with the certain recordings from your office, that you lack the ability to fully control some of your soldiers, whether it be through direct orders, or through the orders of those chosen by you. This puts this entire project in danger of failure. We expect for you to immediately rectify this, or we will be forced to replace you."
Morrigan stared at her computer as the transmission from the Council ended. She slowly reached into a drawer, pressing a small button on the top of it. A small door opened in one of the walls, leading to the Commander's room. Sensing the coming storm, Shalquoir quickly ran through the door, and the Commander closed it behind her. Her expression one of a broken person, blank and expressionless, she pressed the switch for the intercom and said, "Peggy...get me Van Dam."
In a nervous tone, the secretary responded, "O-okay, Commander. Can I, um... can I take my lunch after I do."
"Of course, Peggy. Take the rest of the day off if you'd like." Morrigan leaned back in her chair, and closed her eyes.
Scarlet is in her room, doing push ups. "...26, 27, 28, 29..."
"Ms. Van Dam, please report to the Commander's office. Ms. Van Dam, please report to the Commander's office."
"Right, well than, I better get ready." Scarlet grabs her bag with her weapons in it, and loads her two pistols, her combat rifle, and her grenade launcher. "Please don't force me to kill you, Commander. Because I really don't want to." Scarlet heads to the Commander's office.
At the sound of approaching footsteps outside of her office door, the Commander cracked her knuckles and took a deep breath, preparing for the worse. "Here goes nothing," she mumbles to herself.
Scarlet walks through the door, and the first thing the Commander sees is Scarlet being armed to the teeth. "You wanted to see me, Commander?"
Glancing at the weaponry before her, Morrigan gives Scarlet the look of a disappointed mother. "You goin' to war? Why don't you have a seat." She reaches across her table and grabs a bottle of whiskey. "Would you like a drink? Something tells me we're both goin' to need one."
Scarlet gives Morrigan a look like a child who disappointed her family and drops her bag. "Yeah, why not. I might as well get drunk before I die or get fired."
Morrigan pours two glasses, handing one to Scarlet. Taking a large chug of her own, she says, "So one of your squad mates, you'll forgive me if I don't say which one, was here about thirty or so minutes ago. They were a bit concerned, said you had some sour things to say about your squad captain." Morrigan taps her fingers together. "Can you think of a reason... any reason... why I might have had Atka as your field commander?"
Scarlet took a large chug of her own. "Whelp, I'm guessing that you see me as a psycho that needs to be constantly monitored, just to make sure that she does not kill her own squad mates. Which I will never do, but I would like to hear your answer. Why did you have Atka as my field commander?"
The Commander shakes her head. "This might come as a surprise," she says sarcastically, "but it is hard to find people on base willing to work with you. They see going out with you as going out with a ticking time bomb in their pocket." She leans forward. "You know, I don't pick squad captains randomly. Everyone I've sent out either has great potential, or in Atka's case, actually experience commanding others. She was the only one on that mission that did."
Leaning back again, Morrigan adds, "What's more, I needed someone I could trust to not only keep an eye on you, but to keep you alive. You see, I was afraid that if you were too defiant with any other commander, they'd just finish the argument with a pistol." She imitates shooting Scarlet with her fingers. "I knew Atka wouldn't simply shoot you in the back. That she would actually try to reason with you. And try she did, with the obvious level of success."
"Look, I know that everybody hates me, and they think that pairing with me.. they know that their working with a time bomb, but whether they know it or not, I will give my life to save them, even if I don't like. And the reason behind that is because I'm in the same boat as them." Scarlet thinks for a second. "However, when it comes to leaders, I'm not going to just accept someone as a leader. Take you for example. I would have never followed your orders if you Commanded me after my first mission, but over time you have proven that you can lead, and that you're worthy of your rank. And that your rank was not given to you. Atka was a rookie who thought just because she had a little bit of power, she could order me around. I will never follow people that have everything given to them."
The Commander clenches her fists, her mood suddenly taking a 180. "She didn't think she could order you around because she was power hungry! She thought she could order you around because I ordered her to order you around! It was her job! She was acting directly under me, and defying her was defying me!" The Commander practically jumps to her feet, slamming her hands on the desk. "You are NOT in charge here, and you never will be! You do not have the luxury of choosing who you will take orders from, and I will not cater to a single soldier." She stands up straight and folds her arms. "Oh, I'm sorry, not a soldier, a mercenary. Because despite several words to the contrary, you still believe you are not obligated to act as a soldier in a military institution!"
Scarlet, still staying calm, says, "Look, if I wanted to follows orders blindly, do nothing and sit in my room all day, and wait for a war to happen, I would have joined the military when I was 18. But I didn't. Instead, I became a gun for hire, to be able to do whatever I want, but even though I was free, I still followed orders from my family and other soldiers that have proven their worth and earn their command. Now, to address the Atka thing, what did you expect? Did you really think that I, a specialist, was going to follow the order of a rookie?"
"I promoted her for a reason," The Commander said, sitting down and refilling the two glasses with whiskey. "I felt that she deserved the promotion, considering how much training she has put into the Officer Training School, along with past experience. It is within my power to promote as I please. Were I so daft, I could promote you to Lieutenant General right now. That you continue to question my decisions show that you have made zero progress in learning to follow orders, despite your claims to the contrary." She quickly rifles through some papers, looking for one in particular.
"Wow, I could be promoted to Lieutenant General? But as fun as that would be, it might make you look bad if you promoted me to that. Now despite what you think, I can follow orders, but I would rather see everyone fight first and see what they're capable of before following orders. Hell, if you ordered it, I would go to the pit's of Hell and kill Satan for you."
"Don't tempt me," Morrigan mumbles. Finding what she is looking for, she speaks up. "I do not have the luxury of that sort of time, and I would rather spend it on the military dogs you seem to have so much animosity for. Therefor, for the act of assault on two fellow officers, the assault of a commanding officer, several counts of failure to follow orders on the battlefield, and numerous acts of direct insubordination against numerous commanding officers, including the Commander of X-COM herself, you are to be dismissed from Project X-COM, effective immediately." The Commander rubs her eyes, the drug starting to take effect.
